Ah, but who said it would involve order? There's talk of deliberate chaos and complexity in the shelving design.

The L in the ceiling is a duct for the heating/air conditioning. North America, etc. The house is only three years old so exists as it always has. We did look at older houses but here it's all about the insulation and heating, so the newer, the better.

As for Dredd and G'Nort, that's an accident. I was lugging all those (heavy) boxes into the house and downstairs myself, so I wasn't really thinking about what went there. But you're right. Dredd would shoot him, but G'Nort would shrug it off like the wonderful twit he is.  :)

Anyone from anywhere is quite capable of romanticising and whitewashing the past, even when any rational examination shows nothing but shit on everyone's hands.  The past was crap, and its most important lesson is don't do it again.  The most remarkable thing about human history is that any good stuff actually happened amongst all the horror and misery.

And I speak as someone who has devoted most of his life to preserving and studying bits of it.

Yes, that.

I'm a bit uncomfortable with some of the 1914 "celebrations" I've been reading about. Careful, now.

Books & Comics / Re: To envy Jonathan Ross...

That's pretty cool. I love his enthusiasm for comics, although I do envy his original art collection. He has Jack Kirby pages!

Well, since you asked...

This is an unused space in the basement of our new house. I have permission from my wife to give it the man cave treatment.

And today we collected the last of our stuff from storage. Here is another corner of the basement. It is host to the geek stuff, which is almost entirely comics. There are a few boxes of books and some art, action figures, badges and so on, but I would say that 90% of the stuff is comic books, graphic novels and the like.

Behold:

To give you a sense of scale, top left is an A4-sized commission by the most excellent PJ Holden. And, yes, that's G'Nort, Oor Wullie and, thanks to the splendid board member Mikey, a boxed-up Mongrol. Soon more will be revealed.

This week we had a bit of work done in the house by a very nice man called John. He's a carpenter and a proper craftsman. He made us a new wall to hide a fusebox and it's bloody impressive. He has passed the test.

Now, at our request, John is drawing plans. I've asked him to fill the available space on three walls with shelving, and fans of the website Bookshelf Porn may have an inkling of what we're planning. The budgets involved may mean a month or three of delays but the hope is to have it complete and ready for filling by my birthday in May.

My birthday present? Two days of guaranteed peace and quiet. My wife has promised to keep the children out of my way so I can sort, re-sort and re-re-sort my collection as much as I like.

There will be updates posted here, oh my brothers and sisters. This is my dream come true and I hope you can enjoy it with me. We give thanks to Colin, the Dalai Lama of man cave creation, for starting this thread.

Avanti!

I'm getting it and quite enjoying it. I'm interested to see where it goes.

Yes, you've bought them and they're all yours even if it ends. You just don't get any new ones.

With a three-month sub, I suspect you would get progs for the following three months. There are actually 50 progs a year because of the two weeks off at Christmas. You'd get whatever comes out in your three months.

More like because it's buried in ten feet of snow Trouty.

There is a tradition of discovered turds when snow melts. :-)

But I was here during the summer and the streets are a lot cleaner than anywhere I lived in the UK.

I lived next to an A road for nine years, and the changing of the seasons taught me that plants are an excellent way of reducing traffic noise.

A triumphant comeback for the thread!

Do we have any advocates of Heinz Sandwich Spread?

Five times? Apologies. I should have looked that up instead of remembering.

Jon Snow has the right attitude.

Anyway, back OT, I bet Moore has had the offer quietly at some point.

Splott is known for the dog turd problem - they are EVERYWHERE!  Once I had to call the council to clear up Splott bridge - it was impassable due to dog turds spread over the pavement for a good ten feet.

That's onomatopoeiac determinism for you.

Choking with laughter here.

One of the interesting things about Canada is you don't see dogshit on the streets. People simply don't tolerate it. Since arriving here 10 months ago, I've stood in some exactly once, and I think the reason it was left was the dog was ill. I won't say any more.

But it makes me wonder how much cleaner UK streets would be if the silent majority were less silent.

The MBE bothered me, although I kept my mouth shut. I would love to be offered an MBE, so I could reply in impolite terms. Did you know LS Lowry turned down an "honour" four times? Take a fucking hint, Liz.

When Morrison accepted, I felt disappointed. It felt like he agreed to be associated with the government. His choice, I suppose.

Can you imagine what Alan Moore would have said, if offered? Now that is a letter I would have liked to read.
