I finished Judge Anderson: Shamballa. Some amazing stories in there, especially "Satan", the brilliantly surreal "R*volution" and the wonderful little one-shot "The Protest". Really makes me want to read some more Anderson, good job they have Triad in the library too!

Just started reading "The Complete America" now, the volume with "America" and "Fading of the Light". Great so far...

General / Defoe: Questions
20 October, 2010, 08:12:03 PM
At the suggestion of Mr. House of Usher I'm just asking a few questions to bring me up to speed with Defoe (I've only read progs 1705, 1706 and 1707).

1) Who is the guy fighting alongside Defoe in prog 1707?
2) Apparently Britannia is "the ruler of the world". What is the international situation in Defoe? Do we know?
3) Who is "the fallen angel"?
4) What is meant by the "pale rider"?
5) Is there anything else massively pressing/obvious I should know...?

Prog / Re: prog 1707 mind games

It's taken me ages to actually log in, my uni internet is completely shot to hell this week... anyway! I really enjoyed this prog; I understand peoples' criticisms but for me, this is the issue in which things are starting to make a lot more sense.

Cover: Is it normal for there to be two covers by the same artist in two weeks? I quite like this one, but it's not as good as the cover to #1706.

Dredd: I felt that "Skull Sessions" was an effective enough two-parter... there were a few plot elements that didn't quite sit right with me either, and the end was a nice, effective jolt. Good art too of course.

Low Life: D'Israeli has, as others have said, done a lovely job with those cityscapes - the first page of this episode is particularly nice. I hadn't
noticed that Frank was getting followed at the end
!

Age of the Wolf: Great episode, even for someone like me who is only reading his third. Amazing ending, but what I thought was even better were the few panels that immediately preceded it...

Defoe: I was really unsure of this before, but things have really started happening and there was plentiful quality action. I still have a lot of questions, not sure how many I'm meant to know the answers to though!

Nikolai Dante: Plenty of action, but actual events seem to be moving very slowly to me; nice to get a bit of exposition/backstory though.

Top thrill: Low Life, probably. Defoe and Wolf close behind.

I had a trip to the local library yesterday; quite a few 2000AD books around, so I grabbed The Complete America and Judge Anderson: Shamballa. Have started reading the latter - I hadn't come across Ranson's art before, but I like it a lot, and I like the use of lots of spiritual/religious references, one of the things which make it all very different to Dredd fare I've read...

Will have to read this as I've invested in all the previous volumes... Black Dossier was fascinating in parts but was susceptible to Moore writing about all the most exciting thingd in text, whilst the actual story that O'Neill illustrated was a) brief and b) not that brilliant.

Century: 1910 was also deeply disappointing, I thought. Alarmingly short and with really very little going on considering how slowly this whole saga moves. We'll see how 1969 goes but my hopes aren't especially high.

So, my second prog... enjoyed it.

All-new line-up coming soon, I gather, so look forward to that! There may of course be a fair amount of back-story to the likes of Necrophim and Kingdom, but at least they'll be starting new 'books' or story arcs.

Yeah I'm looking forward to a few fresh-ish starts; that's one of the reasons I find Dredd easiest to get behind at the moment... hopefully I can get into the new stuff fairly easily.

So, my second prog... enjoyed it. I quite like the cover art, although I prefer the last prog's.

Dredd: This I really liked; felt a bit more serious than the one-off in the last prog, and whilst it's new to me I like Richardson's style. A couple of particularly exciting panels, and I'm really excited to be starting to read my first multi-part Dredd narrative that's actually in the pages of 2000AD itself. It'll be exciting to see how it all develops.

Defoe: I'm struggling a bit with this. Being almost completely new to it I'm baffled by the plot and characters, and I'm not a big fan of the art, either. We'll see how it goes, though... there's enough apocalyptic murmurings to keep me going.

Age of the Wolf: Again, this is difficult to get into having not read the first five parts, but the art is nice. Preferred last week's more action-oriented approach to this week's dialogue-heavy one.

Low Life: Again, baffled. But, somehow I still feel invested in Frank's adventures even though I barely know who the guy is. Also, for someone who has only ever read Dredd in large amounts, seeing an alternative perspective of MC1 is great, and D'Israeli is amazing at making the most of black and white art. I loved Leviathan, for example.

Nikolai Dante: The trouble I'm having with this is that it seems you need a lot of background knowledge of backstory to understand what is going on, hopefully I'll catch up a bit though. I'm warming to John Burns' art, even though I feel at times that it's a bit painterly and static. A great last page.

Read my first letters page today as well... ooh, it's all so new!

Welcome to the board / #1705 is My First Prog... Hello!

Hi everyone,

So I'm new to 2000AD. I've only recently started getting into comics actually, but I'd read some Dredd and Rogue Trooper as well as various other bits and bobs like Leviathan and some non-2000AD Alan Moore works, which are of course pretty obligatory and amazing. I was thinking about getting hold of the Dredd Complete Case Files, but soon realised that I'd quickly have spent a huge amount of money so I thought, sod it, let's just jump in.

I study at Keele University and, happily, they actually sell 2000AD in the newsagent on campus (along with a few Marvel UK series and other odds and sods) so that's where I picked up #1705, which I've really enjoyed. No doubt I'll become a regular reader and will come back and discuss future progs  ;)
