You know,I've heard this more and more often recently about those two institutions.Not good-but I suppose QUB rolling over and letting the Geology department die should be a big clue to their motivation.
I didn't go to Uni for a variety of reasons,and I'm somewhat glad I didn't.I work with a bloke who has a BSc,MSc and Phd in subjects *relevant* to the job but I'm earning more than him because I've worked longer and got there by a different route i.e. primarily through experience & part time study.
Saying that,if I had had a degree earlier,I think I would be even further on than I am-it can open doors and opportunities,giving a broader range of options for what you can do with your working life I think.
But,like others have said,it's about the learning process surely and commitment over a period of time to,for want of a better word,a project with a definate aim/result.If it's asubject that you find interesting & rewarding in itself IMO it isn't a waste of time.
