Prog / Re: Prog 1802 - Wanna Confess?

Yup, that's a superb cover that's in the classic category already for me. I spent a while pondering if it was actual paint and decided that it was...job done Willsher!

Dredd was great, really enjoyed the pay off. Don't mess with the Dredds! Also really liked the helmet reflection, really brings you into a story that sort of thing. Even though I liked the possible threads spun out, it felt a bit telegraphed, but I'm being overly picky. I wonder if script droids have been allowed to play a bit with what's going to happen in the future for Dredd? As in the yarns becoming 'canon' (as in Wagner takes note!). I hope that Mark Carrot gets to play out this whole Dolman thing out hisself.

Twisted Tales was OK. I'm generally a fan and do love how the worlds are created, I think of ones like this as the bastard child of Larson. In a good way.

Brass Sun has continued to be the prog highlight for me since it's debut. Feels solid and believeable with deceptively simple art from Culbard. Excellent!

ABC Warriors was brilliant too! Another thumbs aloft for the monochrome work, nicley executed and the perfect device to take the reader back a few years. I'm a fan of Langley's colour work too, mind, especially for the Warriors. It also feels like Pat's hitting the mark throwing some political shenanigans in the mix too.

Grey Area I like. It feels like it's still in the world building stage like the start of Kingdom and hope it gets the time to get epic. Love Carter's colours I must say.

A very strong Prog, Tharg. Keep it up!

P.S. I was also a bit disappointed in the response to Zoe Arnold-Bennett's letter. I suppose it's how 'Tharg' would answer, but it did come accross as very dismissive to me. Who's to say Tharg didn't respond more fully in private?

After seeing the art of Dredd book, the lush flick and me blathering about how good TOD was, Mrs Mikey wants to read it, so I'm going to buy the collected tpb for her.

She used to read the prog so knows the crack with Dredd, but I wanted to add the ancilliary stories too to properly introduce the characters so want to get the full list. Here's what I remember;

Origins.

The Streets of Dan Francisco.

The talented Mayor Ambrose (?)

The Backlash.

TOD.

Anything else for the full picture? She also expressed an interest in the Apocalypse War and Cal :-D

Well, there's the 'underware' and 'cosplay' threads, never mind 'worse tattoos' and the general effing and jeffing. I wouldn't have it any other way.

All told I'd probably be willing to let a, say, 8 year old read the prog as it is. That might change after any awkward questions started!

And besides, it's denying a whole generation the delights of "drokk", "snek", "spug", "funt" and the like. Part of the fun of 2000AD as a youngster was working out what each futureswear meant.

SBT

To do that you'd need to know the real world equivalents!

I can get that there's perhaps an element of Tharg being aware that the comic is being read by, mostly, full grown men who won't be driven from the readership by nudity or swearing, so if it's in the submitted strip it doesn't need excised. Part of the 'jolt' of real world swearing or saucy panels (to me) is that it wasn't in the comic when we were younger so feels out of place sometimes. It doesn't trouble me per se as it's not every strip, every week and it's mostly harmless to the readership I reckon.

But I agree a return to 'all ages' content could be good and might bring in the younglings. But then they might find this messageboard then where would we be? A few choice threads about!

It's all so sad. I admire the talented person that Brett Ewins is, and I hope he can look forward to some happiness.

Well said Trout, couldn't agree more.

Did they mention this to his solicitor?

That's hearsay which doesn't really count in courts. If it was corroborated by an investigating officer or other witnesses in offical statements it might be different.

They do make tiny toys with tiny screws, Jimbo-the 'Action Portable' ones, if I wasn't on me phone I'd post pics.

As Ro-Jaws isn't awfully articulated he might be relatively easy to do at the smaller scale.

As for the whole dark matter debate, I might weigh into this when I get home to a proper keyboard, and don't have to type my long boring response into my tiny intelligent phone machine with my big clumsy cartoon fingers.

Hurray!

Science used to be Drokking fantastic-a lot of it now seems like stomm!

You should start a thread. It'd be great.

Start from the other end (remember that science should always be about developing theories that explain the results, not modifying results to fit the theory) and dark matter, to my (admittedly unqualified) mind looks like a fudge.

I'd say it's more than acceptable to start with a theory then test it! If the results then test the theory the theory is modified etc. As far as I understand it the theories haven't been busted yet as there's no way, as you point out, to observe the stuff but some of the theory which is right about other stuff can accomodate it.

This is all, quite literally, Space Maths so it's well beyond my ken and makes my head hurt a bit. I tried this here and it didn't help.

Film Discussion / Re: DREDD reviews. (SPOILERS!)
10 September, 2012, 01:50:20 PM
Saw it last night...

I'll just add my two creds to say that it was an excellent Dredd film. Mega City One looked bleak and forboding as a relentlessly urban (ha!) landscape would be. The performances were pitch perfect and I personally thought Thirlby had the edge as I was watching it, but quickly realised that Urban had got Dredd so right it was hard to empathise with him in the same way as with Anderson - her purpose after all! Loved how they dealt with her psi and that it introduced the idea of mutants for any possible future outings. I also thought Lena Headly was brilliant giving real depth to the relatively few lines she had, and I was genuinely sorry to see her splat on the slab. A great anti hero imo. Would have liked to see Wood Harris get more to do too, but there you go.

3D was great, only my second experience and I'm impressed by what I thought was just a bit of a gimmick.
I think my favourite scene was when Dredd moves back in from the skate park, tracking the perps, taking most of them out before chucking Caleb (?) off the balcony in front of Ma Ma. Fuckin goosebumps! It was such a great character moment - really showed what a tough, uncompromising, frighteningly driven and possibly psychotic indvidual we're dealing with. Marvellous! I also thought the night view of the City looked amazing and was sorry we didn't see more of it.

I have some minor quibbles, but nothing that spoiled my enjoyment so I'll leave them aside to bask in the fact it was just drokking wonderful to see the characters there on the screen rather than a simulacrum. Up yer shiny bangs and whistles Hollywood, this is a grim hole of a Mega City and by Grud I love it.

Thank you to everyone involved in making this. And congratualtions on hitting #1 in the UK Box Office!

As them young ones do say - MOAR!
