Megazine / Re: New Prog and Megazine............
29 September, 2002, 12:07:47 AM
I really enjoyed the art in Dredd. It was perfectly matched to the story, and was so lively that it was a real tonic after struggiling through Waterloo East station (thank you very much, you greedy bastard tube unions).

FS made me sick for all the struggling artists and writers out there who'd kill for 5 pages of prog to call their own and then have to suffer this crap. This really was the dregs. I'd rather have an epilogue for Bison than... oh bugger it. After enjoying Dredd so much, it made me want to hit something.

Glad SinDex is over, nuff sed. If the next off world saga doesn't shape up then they really need to be put on ice, or be given to a new scribe.

As for the Megazine..... A multiple orgasm in ink.
Aside from the admitedly average (but still very readable TPO), it had no weak points.
Durham Red - The most original yet. Real good choice of artist, too.
Spaghetti vendetta - Very good, though more slightly gratuitous tits 'n' ass. And the windmill seige just made me think of the Invisibles in the same situation. There's so few windmills in comics that you're bound to make such comparisons.
Scarlet Traces - Never read War of the Worlds (shame on me), but I know the story, and this is by far the strongest steampunk/ alternate future type story I've read. D'Israeli was a perfect choice of artist, also. What's with all the "It's grim up north" references in the Meg this month, though?

I agree though that I'm looking foward to the Meg more than tooth, these days. Scrap is the best thing in it at the moment, though I think that Droid Spurrier needs to get less cryptic. The flashback with the missiles was interesting, but poorly written, to the point of being confused and a little gabbling. Still a great read, though.

Good god! I thought that they had burned all their bridges at the end of the second series! This should be great. I'm also looking foward to seing the cast strutting their stuff in the final run of ART next month.

Is he asking Crazy Chrissy to phone him?

Also note the cat. A cult of Scojo? Things are getting sinister.

I dissagree with Sandman having bad artwork - other that a bit of "A game for You", I can't fault the quality. I think the reason for any backlash against the cosy, fairytale atmosphere comes from the simple fact that many comics writers seem to despise the goth culture. Gaimans worst fault with Sandman was it's early reliance on the DC comics universe. It was as though he was too desparate to write for non-vertigo stuff, and Superhero stories.

I also liked Neverwhere. Too many Dr Who references, and written as a comic more than a TV show, but there were some great characters and ideas.

I have to agree that Sandman aside, I havn't really thought much of Neil's writing. However Mr Punch and Signal to noise certainly deserve attantion. His whimsical fantasy approach have gained him many fanatical readers, but has alienated him from many readers and editors who'd prefer the 'hard edge' of Transmet, Preacher, etc.

I may as well add my views, seeing as I've just got around to reading this week's prog.

Dredd - Another 'repercussions will follow' episode. Good stuff.

SinDex - The english accent thing is really getting a bit stale for me, after Carver Hale and 13. Wulf's accent at least served some genuine comedy and character purpose, but this is just mindless 'comedy' thrown in to 'enliven' the story.

Rogue - This super-indestructible Rogue stuff is getting dangerously close to Tor Cyan territory. Okay, so the 'got anything I can use as a can opener?' line was good, but this was just a bit of mindless violence. As an opening story this sort of thing's fine, and I'm hoping that it's purpose is to establish a new enemy, but if it was just an excuse for gunplay, I'll be dissapointed. The art was good, if occasionally a little confusing in layout, but at least it doesn't look as though it's not just there waiting for colouring unlike...

Strontium Dog. Sorry, I'm really just not into B/W esquerra artwork. The story's pretty cool though, and one of the most genuinely funny strip for a while.

Didn't bother with bison. Nuff sed.

News / Re: Dredd vs. Death Press Release....
05 September, 2002, 02:27:45 AM
It sounds like a "let's try to please everybody" thing, but then, that's what happened to the first film. As was agreed in the chat room the other day, Rebellion's AvP was linear but enjoyable, but it only worked because of it's loyalty to the original material.

At Dreddcon1 we had these lovely sticky name tags that left a stain on my leather jacket.

Prog / Dredd will live!
02 September, 2002, 04:56:31 PM
Surely nobody believes that Dredd will die before the release of the Shoreline films and the computer game...

I did earlier suggest Dante, but maybe it will be Anderson. She's certainly runnning out of steam. Unless of course Anderson features in the game or the films.

Prog / Re: Place your bets!

Dredd - No, it would be pointless to kill him before the release of the games or films.

SinDex - Good odds  - they've been around for a while, and there's a lot of people saying that they're past their sell by date.

Dante - My bet - The Tzar Wars run is over, and he's been brought down to earth with a jolt, the saga has reached the point where it either closes, or needs a bloody good excuse to continue

And I thought that the 'Buddy Christ' toy was bad...

Those little guns they come with are cute, but god should have a great bit lightning bolt.
