I know I've just put the post up for the original artwork thingummy but it's just got me thinking about how much 200AD has influenced me throughout my life.

For example I grew up with the comic from its' inception and used to play Judge Dredd in the playground when I was 8 years old! 2000AD inspired me to start drawing and it put me on the road to my career, by the time I was 10 I knew I either wanted to draw comics or be an artist and by the time i was 13 I was doing on O Level in graphic design and I knew that's what I wanted to do for the rest of my life, I think the skills that I developed from copying JD and the rest of the gang, really did help me become who I am today.

How about everyone else out there? Has 2000AD helped you in any way get where you are today?

Cheers Wake

I saw this one on Desperado earlier and is one that I've added to my list. The other Dredd crime files is fantastic, but it may be a bit out of my price range, the day the law died page is great, but I'm not sure about Gary Leach with the inks - Did Bolland only just do pencils on his earlier work?

Ok, I've got to that stage in life where i feel iI deserve something mindblowing, but not quite mid-life crisis...

I'm looking for a piece of 2000AD original artwork to put pride of place in my house, it has to be old, 80's would be good and come from original AD, finally it has to be Dredd, 'cos that's my formative years where I molded myself and AD was a great influence, and preferably Bolland, Esquerra, Gibson, Gibbons or Robinson - the first two are preferable, and if at all possible a cover or first page/spread.

I've started looking on the web, but just thought I would ask.

Please, spread the word.

Cheers
Mike

Right kids?

He may be easy to draw but I think what happens is you get some artists trying to be too realistic and make the outfit, fit an anatomically correct body and that just don work, plus hiding the connections of the limbs ends up with arms and legs akimbo to where they should be.

I would like to say though that I've been back to Grendals site and I disagree totally with Natsan on the idea that Grendal has issues with anatomy, some of his stuff is fantastic, very creative, and although 'not anatomically' correct it's obviously exageratted in favour of storytelling and emphasis. Grendal has serious talent, just think the above Dredd pic was rushed as I said earlier!

Go grendal, go Grendal, go Grendal....wooo!

Yep, and as tanky said, welcome to the site and looking forward to some more Dredd stuff G baby!

Maybe it's to do with the US style of comic books, esp your comments about the head and shoulders issue combined with a walk before you run anotomical problem. In short most US comic characters are over exagerrated in the way they are drawn, angles, muscularity etc. etc. and if you cannot get the anatomy correct on a straight forward illustration, then when you start to explore exagerration that's where it all goes wrong.

You could say that about a lot of artists though, and Grendals got to start somewhere, I mean look at Simon Bisley's early ABC Warriors stuff was awkward, he just went to more life drawing classes and got to understand the way the body works - Grendal a couple of good books for you to look at would be: Drawing with out a model by Ron Tiner and Drawing the Head and Figure by Jack Hamm. Further to that just take a book with you everywhere you go and sketch, draw, paint and make notes more of how people move and animate themselves.

Personally though I don't think Grendals work is all that bad, the Dredd pic above is a bit of a Faux Par, and yes he is very very difficult to draw, because they're are no connections at his limbs, and as you say the expressions are centred around his chin and mouth, but I wouldn't go so far to say that Grendals Anatomy is that poor overall, everybody has to improve and the only way to do that is to keep at it and respect others opinions on crits of your work and keep your head above water when it comes to confidence! What he lacks in anatomy he certainly makes up for in enthusiasm, creativity, individuality, expressiveness and storytelling ability a technicality such as anatomy can easily be cured by experience.
