General / Re: definitive slaine artist

McMahon and Fabry. I never enjoyed Bisley's work for Slaine that much. His skill as an artist isn't really in question but I always found his storytelling a hit-and-miss affair. It was easy to tell which parts of the story he was interested in working on and which parts he wasn't. He also managed to turn Slaine into what Mills had been trying to avoid when he created the strip - the whole overmuscled Frazetta barbarian thing. McMahon's version in particular was a joy to behold: All spiky and sinewy. Clearly not a pretty boy. Sky Chariots is pretty much perfect.

I'll give David Pugh an honorable mention too. Slaine's battle at Clontarf has a lot of energy I love re-reading.

Other Reviews / IDW's Complete Cam Kennedy...

Just arrived this morning. Beautiful. Repros are good and clean. Blacks are solid. Great reminder what a fantastic artist and contributor to Dredd's world and look Cam is. Highly recommended, in my opinion.

Regular Show's Morddecai and Rigby prepare to ravage San Diego. If they can get up off their lazy arses:

Wouldn't think Dredd would be impressed with the sloppy zip work on Anderson here but no-one else was complaining:

METALLICA!

We're all going to Hell for enjoying ourselves, of course. (Surely they could see half this crowd is in no danger of ever fornicating...)

Henry Flint sketch. I have drawn Family Guy's characters for nine years now but I'd be pretty intimidated if someone just marched up to me and asked me to draw one of them right here on the spot. As you can see, clearly Henry has the same problem...

Oh my lord. Usually I go to SDCC once a decade just to remind myself why I'm never going again. Then after a few years I slip up a bit and start thinking "ehh. Maybe it wasn't as bad as I remember it..." and end up going again.

Had a great time but man, if you've never been to this one there's nothing to really describe it. It's like, and I mean this quite literally, stepping onto another world. Completely overwhelming. You can actually feel your brain straining inside your skull simply because it cannot handle the visuals. Everywhere you look, something fucking crazy is happening.

Luckily, I stumbled upon the 2000AD booth as soon as I walked in and blew a chunk of my self-allocated budget in the space of fifteen minutes. No will power. Met the staff. Everyone's a total gent. The almighty Henry Flint sketched me a Dredd. Lovely, lovely guy. Just like Kevin O'Neill, it's disconcerting to try associate the imagery of the art with the actual artist and make it add up. So much stuff to buy. So many shiny things.

The panel was cool. Pretty healthy turnout from the fans. 2000AD's definitely making some inroads here at last, compared to a few years ago. I do feel most of the people were there in relation to the movie but that's good too as at least they're getting exposed to the comic itself and the other characters around Dredd.

Richmond and Dave should be honored to know Zarjaz and FutureQuake got some serious love from the 2000AD staff. They plugged what the guys are doing with real affection and respect.

I'm cool with the IDW Rogue idea. From what I understood, it won't tie in with 2000AD continuity, just like their version of Dredd, and I could be wrong but I got the impression it won't be a retelling of the Traitor General arc either. (Which is probably just as well. Let's have something new.) Dave Gibbons may return to do some cover art for it, which is great. He's excited about a new take on the old material.

Met up with John Higgins after that for a sketch. Great chatting with him. Ended up talking shop with him for about twenty minutes.

I've already spoken to Mick and figured out what's going to happen there. Probably won't be til next year as he's busy but I did ask if he'd consider revisiting this bad boy:

You know what about 6 months ago I asked Mike the exact same thing. Alas finances got a little in the way and so I pulled out. So really can't wait to see how good this looks to discover if there are new levels of jealousy I can scale!

I'm a huge dinosaur nut and I really wanted something with Satanus but someone had already beaten me to it. Considered Golgotha and Hammerstein but figured this'd be a better shot.

Fucking hell, Mick - if there's a comic fan equivalent of the Bling Ring keeping tabs on your whereabouts via social media, that's going to be robbed the next time you post a picture of your Egg McMuffin on facebook. You should have married the girl who delivered that wee beauty.

Y'know, here's the worst part: I broke her heart about a month later when I moved to Los Angeles and she stayed in Dublin. THEN my now ex-wife hated this artwork because it set such a high benchmark for presents. Hahaha!

In other news actually related to this thread: I'm on Mick McMahon and Eduardo Risso's waiting list for commissions. I've already spoken to Mick and figured out what's going to happen there. Probably won't be til next year as he's busy but I did ask if he'd consider revisiting this bad boy:

As for Risso, same thing - he's very busy and I haven't discussed anything with him yet but I've always thought he'd be perfect as a Dredd artist so pretty excited to see what he comes up with.

My pride and joy...

That really is amazing; something I'll never tire of looking at.  I remember you posting this before so I dug out the link to the thread as it had some interesting background stuff

Thanks Ming. It's weird reading my own background to it. I had gotten divorced around that time and had almost convinced myself, completely stupidly, that my ex-wife might have taken it as some kind of f-u. I was so delighted when I found it again. Don't think I don't appreciate how special it is. That's me head Nemesis is holding. "Could be worse". It now hangs over my desk in the house inspiring me when I forget how to draw. (That happens a lot.)

Film & TV / Re: James Cameron faces more problems
01 July, 2013, 02:22:05 AM
It gets some undeservedly bad knockings. Is it original? Not particularly, no. Is it as utterly terrible as everyone makes out? Not at all. It's a perfectly solid sci-fi actioner done on a huge scale. Seems fashionable to bag on Cameron but even at his worst, he's not capable of making movies as downright rotten and dull as Man Of Steel or that Star Trek piece of shit.

This case will go nowhere. I'm sure FOX will have no problem shelving one of its biggest moneymakers in recent years with a bunch of sequels on the way because Dean demands it in a lawsuit. Ridiculous. Give the man some money, all this is about anyway, and make him go away.
