Just in case you don't know, there are two versions - one in Scots and one in English.  It's quite good fun comparing them in Borders.

I got the Scots version out of my local Asda for a fiver, I'm Scottish and lived all my 39 years in Scotland and still struggled to read the bloody thing,I think thats how the sheep-shaggers up north speak though.Some lovely art from Cam though.

Whilst many words have passed out of common usage now, many people will recognise them- sometimes you don't recognise them when written, as Lowland Scots isn't much of a written 'language' anymore, and there are words used all the time when i was a kid which I couldn't spell because I always thought of them as slang. However, if you're struggling with the teuchter leid, try here...

Oh, that's great news - especially that their version of Kidnapped has been welcomed by teachers.  

I thought LOEG might be similarly welcomed, then remembered that Hyde buggers the Invisible Man to death.  So, that probably taints it somewhat as a teaching tool.

I saw a TV programme about RLS in which he showed the original manuscript to his wife and she was so horrified by it that she insisted that he should re-write it. IIRC he burned the original draft and re-scripted it to be more palatable. What i'd give to see that manuscript!
