If not already mentioned, I'm always a big fan of ULZANA'S RAID.  Burt Lancaster is just superb.

OUTLAW JOSEY WALES is great as well. His "killing words" speech at the end is spot on and underlines the fact that, in all his westerns, Clint has never shot an Injun.  (Of course someone will prove me wrong).

I'm amazed ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST hasn't got more votes. As well as being cinematic genius, Claudia Cardinale is weapons grade sexy.

Didn't Walter Hill remake the WILD BUNCH as EXTREME PREJUDICE?

CALAMITY JANE is obviously at the other end of the spectrum as far as grit is concerned but you can't beat the glorious songs and two shockingly attractive leads in Doris and Howard.  I'd shag 'em both.

For modern (setting) westerns, I thoroughly enjoyed NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN recently.

Be excellent to each other. And party on!

Seeing as the last post mentioned Walter Hill how about Last Man Standing ?

Not set during the gold rush era but in the 1930s neverthe less its a brilliant film .

 Watchable over and over again.

Also The Quick and the Dead [Sam Riami] .Sharon stone / Gene Hackman [not that one].

Brilliant and a very strong female lead which makes a change in the male dominated world of the Wild West.

Jonah Hex is highly recommended by me at least. Not the least part of it's charm is the self contained nature of the stories.

Has anyone seen that series starring Bruce Campbell, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Adventures_of_Brisco_County%2C_Jr.">"The Adventures of Briso County Jr."

If you have, what did you think?

I haven't seen it, but it looks like my kind of thing. It's mainly western but has elements of sci-fi mixed in.

It was canceled after the first season, although it ran for 27 episodes apparently. (They really do these things big in America don't they?) Last I checked the DVDs aren't available over here, although no doubt I'd be able to grab a region 1 if I wanted.
