A long time ago.....

.... and it may have been in a summer special, there was a short story about two criminals, boy and a girl, who were caught tried and punished in an unusual way.  The punishment was to become integrated into a Starship, with the boy in a millitary vessel and the gal into a commercial one.

Does anyone remember the name of the author of this piece please, and when it was published (must be late '70s I guess), and if you know where I can find it I'll be speechless!
