Depressingly I'm now older than the Witchfinder General was when he did his foul thang. In fact there's probably only Spurioso and Finn Sin that are younger than he was.

You know you are old when the monsters that scared you in childhood now look freshfaced in comparison.

DXB, you have a point there.

Now I've opened a can of worms...

Mk13

Didn't know Matthew Hopkins was especially young (though shorter expected lifespans in the era he was doing his Torquemada thang suggest that average ages were much younger anyway), but ISTR the guy who directed the film was also very young and troubled, and he threw himself under a train after only a couple of movies, when he was 25.

esoteric ed

yup, Michael Reeves who directed Witchfinder General did indeed commit suicide soon after the movie was completed, which was a real shame as he was an emerging talent (I didn't know it was a train though yeuchh, I heard it was drugs!?).

What a waste! :-(

Mk13

Not entirely sure how he died - thought it was under a train but it could well have been drugs. Unfortunately the normally reliably detailed IMDB doesn''t have a lot about him.

esoteric ed

Yeah, I noticed that the IMDB had nothing about him.
but here his is...

According to the Amazon reviews of this great fillum...

"Sadly, this promise remained unfulfilled as Reeves died suddenly, soon after completing the film, from a lethal cocktail of prescription drugs; Witchfinder General remains his only significant work."

and...

"It's a pity that Reeves died shortly afterwards of a mixture of barbiturates and alcohol, and yet fitting that the contemporary media exploited the seemingly accidental overdose as a "suicide".

Yikes. I'm off to change me username.

Thanks Smiley... if you read carefully you'll also see that the review of the DVD on Amazon titled "Beautiful Horror?" is by yours truely.

Oddboy

Could've been a combination of drugs & trains, I hear they're quite leathal when mixed.

BTW I'm still pretty young (23).
Better set your phaser to stun.
