'My only concern is that this opens up the characters for any old hack to join in. I've read the Action special and seen what can happen.'

Have to strongly disagree with you there - I loved the Action special. I thought it was one of the most original and inventive things 2000ad had done in a while when it came out. I was particularly impressed by Cursitor Doom and the Steel Claw, both genuinely dark and disturbing (not easy to pull off in comics).
Also have high hopes for Alan Moore and daughter.

"both genuinely dark and disturbing (not easy to pull off in comics)"

In the gritty nineties, it was exceptional not to be dark and disturbing.  The Action special was a one off and I can't say I begrudge it, but then I don't really like it much either.

Best bit of the action special was the article, which is a good introduction to the comics of the time.

I'll be honest, beyond Alan Moore, I'm not sure there are any writers still going I would want to trust with this stuff.  Alan always brings the best out of the characters, making them fresh and exciting while keeping them still faithful to the original (unlike the Action Special) and writing some really good stories to boot. The perfect person for the gig.

I know what you're saying, but as I said, it was hard to pull off being GENUINELY dark and disturbing. Most stuff in comics tried and failed. The one thing in 2000ad that ever truly put the, ahem, willies up me was that terror tale about the lunatic foretelling the coming of Lovecraft's dark gods. It was drawn by Dave d'Antiquis; anyone remember who wrote it?

Sorry, bit of a tangent there, get back to Alan Moore any time you like, y'all!

Tangent away old bean.

It was an interesting iew onto what might have become of the characters if updated for the time, anyway.

Jayzus -

It was written by Chris McHale, which apparently may have been a pseudonym for - shock horror! - Mark Millar.

Agree with you on how good it was - one of my top 3 ever.

was in responce to "Fantastic news! Just hope that Ms Moore is as good as her old man."

when Ms moore is an artist and he is a writer was kinda being jokie/phasceus (or how ever you spell it)

Facetious.  Though I did double-check that with the dictionary!

No, my fault, I just didn't get what you were saying.  One of my slow days (no facetious comments, please).

If so, I have to hand it to the man, he didn't do a bad horror story. Silo was good (apart from its way-too-obvious 'sampling' of films), as was 'The Amazing Dr. Doctor'. And D'Antiquis should have done more stuff in colour!

Of course, a lot of the old characters have been revisited courtesy of Paul Grists excellent Jack Staff.
The GN from Image is the one to look for - proper stories (rather than brief cameos) from The Spider and thinly disguised Janus Stark, Adam Eterno, The Steel Claw, Robot Archie...http://www.internationalhero.co.uk/spider1.jpg">
