House of Usher

Firekind had nothing to do with Dungeons and Dragons. It may have had more to do with Ursula LeGuin or Anne McAffrey, but I've never read the work of either, so that's for others to say.

No, it's about anthropology in space. There's an anthropologist from Earth doing participant observation on an alien planet, where the natives have a symbiotic relationship with a dragon-like species.

The one thing that struck me as odd was the word 'Llantrisant' showing up in the aliens' vocabulary as their word for symbiote. I guess John Smith was saying something about the arbitrariness of language and that meaning is inherent in the object and not the word, but it does stick out (like a sore thumb) as something quite barmy.

Very good series though. An under-appreciated classic.
STRIKE !!!

I think it was Paul Marshall( is that right?)s best work
The more experienced he got the more cartoony his style became i thought.http://www.2000ad.org/thrillpower/832.jpg">

I'd agree with that. I had a flick through Firekind last night, and I couldn't believe how different the artwork was. His later work might have been more technically accomplished, but I much preferred the style he used on this series.

"No, it's about anthropology in space."

Hence the reference to Le Guin, whose major SF works are about just that: the "Mobiles"  (anthropologists / diplomats / contact personnel) of the "Ekumen" (a benevolent hands-off central government for the diaspora worlds of Hain, of which Earth is one) and the different iterations of human society and culture they find on Hain's far-flung lost colonies.

Try: "The Dispossesed" (greatest SF novel ever written, IMHO); "Left Hand of Darkness" and "Four Ways to Forgiveness" for a taste of Firekind-alike pleasures, and I virtually guarantee you'll waste huge chunk of your life tracking down the rest of Le Guins' stories form the "universe with holes at the elbows".

But you are of course right, Le Guin is also famous for the greatest "dragon books" of all, the Earthsea quintet.  But nothing at all like Ann McCaffrey, who started out great but went to pieces: Le Guin just gets better and bette as the years go by.

My first run with 2000AD came just as Finn was winding down. Always thought he looked a cool, interesting character so I'd be up for seeing some of his stuff reprinted.

Would also like to see Third World War reprinted, sounds a very interesting series.

The I is for 'I can't remember the password to my other account' or Ian. One or the other.

C/O, but put out by Fleetway - it was a CRISIS thing.

O Lucky Stevie!

i like third world war, but stick with savage--easily everything that third world war should have been.

i've wet my knickers!
"We'll send all these nasty words to Aunt Jane. Don't you think that would be fun?"

johnnystress

Third World War! that'd be a great series to reprint . Especially in book form. It kind of lost its way towards the end, kind of like the comic itself, but it was a great read for a while

Mr C

Gah! No! Don't reprint anything in crisis, just don't do it! Please god, no!

Can you handle it?!?!

Yes, I can thank you, now stop lecturing me with your teen angst/political guilt trips.

Guess you had to be there or something.

The Amstor Computer

Ah, there was some good stuff in Crisis - certainly enough for a couple of decent collections.

johnnystress

Its true that the overall, cloying PC-ness is very dated now-(Pat Mills is gradually copping on to this hence the recent improvement in his stories.)
But I still think 3rdWW would make a great collection, New Statesmen too and there were a few shorter run gems in there too.

Other reprints/collections Id like to see would be Wired World and Hugo Tate from Deadline

johnnystress

oh yeah and getting abck on topic..
