Recently ran into a problem, which result in me having to reinstall Norton Firewall (2002) I'm running Win 2000 2nd edition as OS.
When my firewall is now enabled, I can't access any web features or email, but if I disable it I can. I've added permission to the Internet Access Controls for (amognst others) IE and Outlook Express, but still no access.
Can anyone help me with some ideas. PURLEAZE. Prutty Purleaze.
Cheers

Unistall it and replace it with sygate personal fire wall. That will fix all your problems.

No idea, sorry. I use ZoneAlarm myself on XP SP2 - never had any probs.

I had exactly the same problen - I couldn't even deinstall it as the admin password waslocked out. The cause? I'd got the Blaster (or was it the welcher) virus. Once I'd removed that - no problems.

Might be worth checking

Time for a virus check up then.
Could it be a Trojan?
Could it be to do with how the programs are linked with TCP and UDP's? I have noticed that the programs that aren't working are not connecting to TCP's? Anyone know about these, and how they work with installed programs?

I've upgraded my virus definitiions (by logging on with my firewall turned off!).

And ran the anti-virus program last night. Luckily it came back negative. No virus!

But I still can't log on- I can't use Internet Explorer, or Outlook Express. I can use Yahoo Messenger.

For some reason these programs don't seem to be able to make a TCP connection. Does anyone know how I can get this to happen? or even if it would help?

Should I try reinstalling IE and OE?

I reinstalled Firewall again this morning, but it didn't help.

Cheers Daney!

(Oh, and I didn't get a prog this morning either!!! :-( )

It sounds like your firewall is doing its job too well!

Seriously, why not try Zonealarm? It's free, reliable, easy to use. And if it doesn't solve your problem, then at least it points to something else rather than Norton specifically.

Be careful. If you put two firewalls together they'll fight like bitches on heat... or so I've heard, I dont even have a firewall (incredibly stupid given the dodgy sites I visit ;p)

Norton firewall wouldn't run on my home PC (brand new and super fast - it was brought to it's knees by the thing).  Symantec's response was that it was something else's fault and I should track that down and uninstall it.  Gave up and went back to Zonealarm.  However, the Norton now runs very happily on my Laptop.  Go figure.

You could start up in safe mode and see how it performs - and then try the same thing but restarting different programs to see if there is a conflict with one of them.

Right... Bye Bye Norton.... Hello ZoneAlarm
I've installed it, and it all seems to be working! But it's blocking 1000's of attacks!!!

So I reckon I'm gonna buy this, as well as their pest control software- to get rid of all the nastiess that their tester program found.

Anymore advice?

Zonealarm is a fully working package - you don't have to go for the full package if you don't want.  It's a fairly nice firewall in its own right, but the pro edition has the pop-up blocker and some additional functions.

For the record, I just use the basic edition.

I use the ZoneAlarm free edition too.

And with AVG, AdAware and Search & Destroy available for free (for home use), you probably won't need to upgrade ZoneAlarm.

Too late, I bought it, along with the Pest Patrol program.

PP is still doing it's business- and so far as found 49 "pests"

Firewall has so far blocked 316 intusions of which 71 were high-rated.

The popups that they keep advising me that another attack has been blocked are damn annoying- and I don't understand quite why there have been so many "attacks"- I wonder if something hasn't been installed correctly.

I think I'll be running anti-virus (Norton) again tonight!

You can ignore most of the attacks and set your settings so that don't keep interrupted.

You can turn off alerts under Alerts & Logs, on the left hand menu...
