What's the best bit of comics art you've ever seen?

I'm discussing 3D vs 2D with the Striker forum, and wanted something I could put up there to demonstrate how good 2D art can be.  Scans particularly welcome.

It'd have to be a moment where the story would be nothing wthout the genius of the art conveying the emotion etc.

Any ideas?

Richmond Clements

The first thing that cam to mind when reading your question was the episode of Watchmen, where Dr Manhattan is on Mars. Watching the sand run through his fingers, and the photograph fall.

Matt Timson

I don't think that the issue is with 2D or 3D art as it's all actually 2D.  The question should really be about computer generated art v traditional.  I'm happy with either, so long as they are done well- I just don't think that the style used in Striker is a particularly good one.

Even Clint Langley gets a bit of a bashing and frankly, his stuff is about as far beyond what goes on at Striker, as Striker is beyond drawings of stick-men in my opinion.  Although I actually prefer stick-men.  No offence.

Examples of Clint's work can be seen here:

These aren't particularly brilliant examples as they're not part of an actual strip- but they'll do for a start.
Pffft...

House of Usher

At least one person on that forum already seems to know Alex Ross, so it couldn't hurt to find some to show the others.

A.B.C. Warriors - the retreat from Volgo, fully painted.
Henry Flint's Total War - Ezra Pound evacuation + various nuclear explosions to choose from.
Recent Ezquerra stuff - Strontium Dog or Koburn.
Brian Bolland - e.g. Brit Cit Babes Megazine cover.
Ian Gibson - Halo Jones.
STRIKE !!!

Cam Kennedy's Ro-Busters in Starlord.  The 9/11 spread where the plane crashes into the high-rise building, Futurepoint.  Amazed me at 9 years old, amazes me at considerably older.

Anyone got a scan?

Don't know if stuff like Flint, Ezquerra or Gibson would get a Striker fan going.  Think they would prefer the more 'real world' artist, such as Cam Kennedy, Bolland or Langley.

who cares what Striker fans think? That comic is deadly dull, no artist on earth could make it otherwise.
Mind you, I`ve only read one issue. Do let me know if the others are terrific.

The Dredd/Orlock fight in the rain at the end of Block Mania.

That prompted me to do a search for Ian Kennedys stuff and I came across this great interview, with Chris Weston asking the questions!

" It doesnt have to be a bloody masterpiece!"

I'll second the vote for the Bolland Orlock stuff (or ANY page of Judge Death Lives).
And not to forget 'Sky Chariots' by Mike McMahon.

I really like the work of karl Kopinski, he's a lovely guy too.http://www.rpgunited.com/picture/magazines/kaljerico.jpg">

although not the best, the one that struck me the most was the carlos ezquerra artork on the 10th planet. thats the first time i've ever seen computer graphics intergrated with art for a comic strip. best art ever....cover to prog 403 drawn by bolland.

Fully painted art triumphs over 3d stuff any day of the week..with the painted art, skill, talent and technique is blindingly apparent whereas all you need to with the cgi stuff is be competant at using a programme..

Martin Jameson

"The Dredd/Orlock fight in the rain at the end of Block Mania"

My personal favourite comic strip art ever.

Anyone know where the original art is?

Sin City 1, beautiful, involving, moody art, and the polar opposite of everything Striker it trying to achieve.
