"Simon Spurrier. He?s one of those writers who is able to split the readership in two right down the centre. Either you think he?s a brilliantly witty writer with a fine sense of comic timing, or he?s dredging the worst depths of student level humour."

I always thought it was kind of a bit of both. In a good way, of course.

I think Spurrier splits his own work down the middle, to be honest. I just don't think he does comedy very well, from what I've seen anyway. He seems to try too hard with it, involving the reader at every step to make sure they get the jokes. Simping  Detective you can probably forgive, because the artwork is perfect for the kind of story it wants to be.

I will, no doubt, be completely wide of the mark here, because I don't know Spurrier at all, but it seems like he knows that the short stories he writes wont get bloody read. It's a shame because they're good, too.

I wish he'd try more serious strips every now and then.

This coming from a casual 2000AD fan who knows next to nothing. So take from that what you will.

Oddboy

It's a bloody hard book to find. Not in FP, Blackwells or Waterstones. Hmpf.
Better set your phaser to stun.

DavidXBrunt

It's in the Waterstones in Manchester, has been froa couple of months now. I even took some pictures on my phone to prove it. You are looking amongst the Warhammer books, aren't you?

Bolt-01

Nice review, makes me3 want to read the book even more.

The wages of sin are death, but the hours are good and the perks are fantastic.

Oddboy

Yeah - I looked pretty much everywhere in the fiction section. Reckon it'll be quicker to wait the six weeks that Amazon'll take to deliver.
Better set your phaser to stun.

I can't remember if you're in it Lobo, but Oddboy, Trout and Slippo are.

thrillpowerseeker

totally undecided on whether to buy this or not...a massive SD fan so I'd like to...however it seems to be what I'd come to expect..piss weak student humour crap and fanboy acknowledging (are they or aren't they?) ...sounds like he's wrote a Bec and Kawl story using Johnny and Wulf....

on the other hand I may read it if it comes to my local library...

just to make sure its as bad as I feared of course..

Slippery PD

I am?  Blimey, whod have thought that???

If that's the impression I've given in the review, then it's the wrong one. It's an SD tale, no doubt.

Hah.  For some reason that made me think of Mary Whitehouse sitting at the back of a porn theatre, "just to make sure it's as filthy - FILTHY! - as I thought it would be..."

More than that, he splits readers down the middle!!!

Specifically, I don't 'get' B&K at all (with sincere apologies to my esteemed fellow Boarder for saying so), but "From Grace" is simply one of the best examples of comic storytelling I've ever read. I love it.

Even if I didn't like your writing, for that alone you deserve to be inducted into the Hall of Kings in Valhalla.

Mr. Spurrier, we salute you!
