A call out to the music and DJ types on the board...

I used to be in a band back in college (long time ago now) and although I've given up hopes of becoming a rock god I still have a tape of two songs we recorded (plus a load of concerts we did).  Now the tapes are analogue (the lads never gave me digital copies due to me missing the remixing and backing vocal session (due to me being drunk)).

So before the ravages of time completely kill the tape I want to get it cleaned up (if possible) and put on to CD (hard drive), etc.

Can you recommend the best, easiest and cheapest ways of doing this?

Many thanks,
WoD.

House of Usher should be able to help, i know he's been transfering records to his pc.

You just need a line out from your source and a line in on your soundcard (or even a mic socket will do sometimes), and an appropriate cable. Get a Wave Editor (eg Goldwave), start the original, press record in the editor, and there you go.

Once you have imported the file, you can use the Editor to trim it and manipulate it (remove fuzz, alter levels, add echo etc) as easy as you like, and then save it as a Wav, mp3 or whatever.

There is a bit of software for doing just what you need. I keep seeing it advertised in a free catalogue my dad gets plagued with. If it's not 'audio cleaning lab' it's v similar...
Anyways, me and housemate #1 are trying to do the exact same thing with our old band tapes, so when we make some progress, i'll let you know
