The Amstor Computer

Hullo, all. I'm in the middle of cataloguing the New Eagle from the 1980s, and I'm trying to get full names for some of the artists and writers who worked for the comic at the time. Some of them I've been able to match up with the people in the database here, but some are proving rather more elusive.

Where possible, I've tied the writer or artist to a strip they worked on for a period, but a number of these creators only appeared a few times. I'm guessing they were guesting from other publications or "slumming it", so if anyone recognises names from that period, chip in. Any help would be welcome!

-------------

Writers:

J Spence (writer on "The Fists of Danny Pyke")
B J Tomlinson
J Nicholas
A Stone
J Louise
C Potter
J Trevelyan

Artist:

Carmona (artist on "Manix")
Heinzl (artist on "Doomlord")
Escolano (artist on "Walk or Die")
Chiari
M Turner
P Gascoigne (artist on "News Team")
Zeccara
C Cruz (artist on "Dan Dare")
Gual (artist on "Marathon Man!"
J Vernon (artist on "Sgt. Streetwise")

The Amstor Computer

OK, done a little more research & it's possible that "Carmona" is Manuel Carmona, who also worked on the Semic James Bond strips. "Gual" is also possibly Josep Gual, another artist on the Bond comics. "Escolano" also appears to have worked on them, though I can't find mention of his full name.

"Zeccara" *may* be an Italian SF artist called Nevio Zeccara, a member of Studio Giolitti. Giolitti supplied art for a huge number of Brit comics.

"P Gascoigne" could be Phil (Phillipe?) Gascoigne, an artist who worked on girls' comics (notably, "Jinty") in the 70s and 80s.

I'm pretty confident "C Cruz" was actually "Carlos Cruz", but I'd appreciate a confirmation on that.

Any other info would be greatly appreciated!

I'm pretty confident "C Cruz" was actually "Carlos Cruz", but I'd appreciate a confirmation on that.

Here you go... :)

Have a feeling J. Spence was Pat Mills in disguise (poorly recalled interview from Speakeasy, was it?).

GordonR

B J Tomlinson would, I think, be Barry Tomlinson, who was an editor/manager at IPC at the time.  He's mentioned a couple of times in Trill Power Overload, iirc.

Can't help with any of the others, sorry.

Is there any database of creators pen-names?  I know TB Grover was the Wagner / Grant combo, but I also know that several creators have utilised pseudonyms over the years and it'd be helpful if there was a one-stop-shop of data regarding who's who.

Sorry - ignore that, the link given above (http://members.fortunecity.com/ukko/creators.htm) is just what I needed - ta.

Here's the best list I can help you with:

J Spence: Are you sure this isn't D Spence, who scripted the fists of danny pike and the ultimate warrior? If so, this is a pseudonym of John Wagner
B Tomlinson: Barrie Tomnlinson
J Nicholas: James Nicholas
A Stone: ?
J Louiss: ?
C Potter: ?
J Trevelyan: ?

Carmona: Manuel Carmona
Heinzl: Heinzl
Escolano: Escolano
Chiari: Chiari
M Turner: Are you sure this isn't Ron Turner who did work on your namesake, The Amstor Computer??
P Gasgoine: Phil Gasgoine
Zeccara: Nevio Zeccara
Cruz: Carlos Cruz
Gual: Josep Gual
J Vernon: John Vernon

Also, one you didn't ask for: Vanyo is Eduardo Vano, with the "n" in Vano having an accent above it.

Here's a list of some aliases you may need:

GRANT/GROVER: Alan Grant/John Wagner
KEITH LAW: Alan Grant
D HORTON: Barrie Tomlinson
IAN HOLLAND: John wagner/Alan Grant
D SPENCE: John Wagner
F. MARTIN CANDOR: John Wagner/Alan Grant
R CLARK: John Wagner
RICK CLARK: John wagner/Alan Grant
W STEELE: John wagner/Alan Grant
A O'KAY: John Wagner/Alan Grant...this is my favourite one!!
G MILLAR: Roy Preston

There's one more I'm not sure about. I have it that JACK ADRIAN was an alias for Chris Lowder but I alsothought Jack Adrian was real!! Wasn't he interviewed for one of Dave Bishop's series'?? Maybe somebody else could help with that???

jdmobius

By the way, if you need any further help (missing credits etc) mail me through this site and I'll try to help you where I can.

>I know TB Grover was the Wagner / Grant combo

T B Grover was a pen name for John Wagner alone, nothing to do with Alan Grant.

The Amstor Computer

Right, thanks are in order!

UKD - Cheers for those links"

Wils - Thank-you for the confirmation ;-)

Gordon - I suspected it might have been. Thanks.

jdmobius - Spot on! I'll go through the names quickly...

J Spence - this writer is credited alternately as "J Spence" and "D Spence" on "The Fists of Danny Pyke". If "D Spence" was a pseudonym used by Wagner, I'll assume that "J Spence" is just a version of that pseudonym.

M Turner - it's possibly it was Ron Turner, so I'll compare the styles on their credited strips.

re: the single-name artists... I take it their full names have never been discovered?

Thanks for that list of aliases. I knew a couple of them but the rest are new to me - I'll be making a number of changes to the database based on these!

Cheers for the offer of help - once I've tidied up what I've got so far, I'll fire any missing credits your way.

One last thing - I remember reading that Alan Grant did some work on One-Eyed Jack. Does anyone know who else worked on the strip? None of the OEJ stories in the Eagle ran credited (nor did its follow-up, Gaunt - The Haunted Man) so while it's easy to spot the artist (John Cooper) it's nigh-on impossible to say who wrote individual strips.

Even just a guess as to who may have worked on it would be useful!

Cheers, all :-)

jdmobius

One eyed Jack was exclusively drawn by John Cooper and exclusively writted by John Wagner.

Gaunt was scripted by John Wagner and Pat Mills

>I have it that JACK ADRIAN was an alias for Chris Lowder but I alsothought Jack Adrian was real!!

Jack Adrian was indeed Chris Lowder.
