"From watching the first show I just didn't like the casting much anyway, nice enough chap as he seems he just sounded more like he was in Two Pints Of Lager And A Packet Of Crisps. I can see why they wanted to make a break from having him eccentric"

He wasnt eccentric?  He didnt dress "eccentrically" and he didnt sound posh, but he was as eccentric as any other Doctor as far as I could tell...

REG is a cliched shorthand for eccentric - before you put his name forward, listen to the lack lustre performance he gives in the web thing...

Shame to see Eccleston go, but I can't say it was a surprise.  Part of me's disappointed he wasn't willing to do just one more series out of loyalty (perhaps a strong word, but one he's used himself) to RTD and the kids who he wants to view him as their Doctor.  He may not want to get typecast as the Doctor, but he'll certainly be typecast as an actor who won't commit to anything longer than a series (look at Cracker).

The other part of me is just thankful that he's given his all for the time he's done it, helped make it a success (enough for a recommissioning anyway).

Just glad I'm not a toy manufacturer, and hope it doenst switch people off watching what looks to be a storming series!

IMO, it's less of a shame that Eccleston is going - though I have enjoyed his performance so far - and more of shame that someone thought right now was the best time to announce it.

Great first show ratings, good reviews & the announcement of a second series, then this? Perhaps it's understandable, in that if he wants to leave & a second series has to enter pre-production, they're going to need to find a new Doctor, but it just seems a bit daft to announce this so soon into the new run.

Ah, well. I'll enjoy this series & hope the next Doctor is as good - or better - than Eccleston...

Wasn't his character (rather shockingly) killed off in Cracker?

Or did that only happen because he told the producers he wanted written out?

Yeah - If I've not been misinformed, he asked to go, so they killed him off
