Saw it at the cinema, wasn't impressed. It's visually  interesting, but TBH they don't have the budget to pull off what they're trying to do, and in terms of plot, story, characters etc... it's completely incoherant.

I don't know how much films like this get butchered in western cinematic distribution deals, but I suspect quite a bit, at least sometimes.

Casshern does look a bit grandiose, but hey.  I'll be watching this at the weekend, anyway, and I'll be interested to see how it shapes up.  It's going to be a bit of an asian film-fest in my house: Oldboy and Ong Bak last night, and Monday, Dangan Runner and Casshern for the weekend!  Kung-fu hustle was as good as you could want, as well, so if you get the chance to see it...

Well, I finally watched Casshern and while it didn't blow me away, overall I liked it.  There's less fighting than the trailers would lead you to believe (and you tend to notice this in a film of nearly 2 and a half hours).  The first Casshern vs. robots fight is fantastic, and as Art says, visually, there are lots of incredibly nice touches.  Anything with this many robots and crazy flying things can't be all bad, and it retains a cartoony feel in places, which fits with its anime origins.

Plot-wise, it's a bit confusing in places, but no worse than many mainstream Hollywood efforts (e.g. Mission Incomprehensible).  I didn't find there to be that much character confusion really, as it's all spelled out by the end of the film.

Anyway, here's a link to a proper review:
