I kinda like to see some Judge Fargo flashback type stories. The building of the Big Meg, clashes with the deminishing police forces and the growing population.
Hows about it Thargo.

Yeah, if it could get that Soylent Green vibe it would rock.  We need gritty urban science fiction.

I'd like to see something along these lines too, I think it'd be interesting to revisit the foundations of Dredd's world.

The sad thing is, is that Dredd's current world gets a shabby treatment.  It is for my mind among the top ten SF backgrounds created this century.  We get six pages a week of usually fluff and an extra twelve pages of fluff per month.

In theory, our 2000AD's should be ruined by the tears of joy we weep with each reading, in reality we ruffle the pages occasionally.

I really wish the Dredd Megazine had fulfilled its potential, earlier on.  I think its previous failures mean it is now a very good anthology comic, but we all know Dredd's world deserved more.

I'd love to meet Fargo.  I was never sure either way about that ghost of Fargo issue.

But I want to see more!  I want to see civilisations quake and the rise of the judges!  Quite frankly, in comparison, George Lucas is working in the medium of shite.  He's created one good story, a handful of characters, one religion and he's bodged it.  The total cost of the entire backlog of Judge Dredd the strip can't have even reached the cost of the original star wars.  Fuck movies we've got comics!

Oh, did I tell you I wasn't feeling well?

Trust pvs to start moaning!

John Wagner has slaved over Dredd for 25 years and pvs is still moaning!:)

Six pages of fluff he says!!!!

Oh well.

Couldn't agree more,PVS.I think Dredd is one of THE greatest works of science fiction of all time, and a definitive history of the Judges and the Meg is a brillant idea.Wasn't there a story in the megazine early on The Bad Man or something, that was gonna do that very story, but it disappeared after a few episodes? If you think about it,Fargo would be born round about now.

paulvonscott

I wouldn't complain about Wagners input one iota.  I love sin city, Dredd should be as good every week.  But it ain't.

I think it needs more input.  Look at what Pat Mills put into Dredd, though his pagan face would be a-blush and rosey to admit it.

I would go further. I think Dredd is the greatest sci fi of them all.

That is why I wrote my Dredd scripts. Cos I love Dredd so much.

I think the real problem with Dredd: The Backstory is it will take some time for Wagner (or another writer) to work it all out. All the characters, all the key events etc. Could run for a number of progs too.

I have a feeling John doesn't want to explain how the judges came to power. Take too long to write, too much work!

I think he would have written it by now.

I did post an idea about an epic early Dredd tale called Judge Dredd: Legend. It was a story showing Dredd graduating and explaining a bit more about who he really is.

Kind of the man behind the helmet sort of thing.

If Rebellion would consider my idea, I'd love to write it.

Oh well I tried!

Yeah but pvs, it is not humanly possible for Dredd to be great every week!

No writer (yes not even me:P) could write high quality stories week in week out. It's impossible.

I think John has done remarkably well to write consistently high quality Dredd strips for the last 25 years. I doubt there are many writers in the world who could equal that feat.

Re Pat Mills.

Mills just emphasized Dredd's heroic side. I think John's version is closer to the true spirit of Dredd. Dredd is heroic but not in the conventional sense. Pat's Cursed Earth Dredd was a bit too liberal for my liking.

Oh well don't I go on.

scojo going on

paulvonscott

I was more talking about Dredd's world than Dredd himself.

Too liberal?

Man, you got it bad.  Real bad.

satchmo

Dredd at his most heroic has got to be Necropolis, his return to the city in that knackered old car is still the most intense next prog -waiting experience I've ever had.Oh,and when Demarco snogged him. That was a long week too.

paulvonscott

Yeah.  That DeMarco snog. Its a top 5 moment, thats for sure.

satchmo

All week long I was thinking whats he gonna do?send her to Titan?break her jaw?maybe even shag her?I just didn't see it coming at all.Thats just brillant writing.I think she'll be back in Dredd's life eventually. They could have a nuclear family with Rico doing all the chores and Mrs Gunderson coming round for tea.I'd pay good money to see that!

paulvonscott

I was really dissapointed that so few people voted for Dredd getting married and having a family, in the Fate of Judge Dredd poll.  I think it was about 4 out of 93 at the last count, with more people wanting him dying in a minor skirmish.

Ah, Mr. Whit spots a chance to talk some bollocks about continuity.

But can't be arsed.
