Dear Col. Marbles,

Carey has work for Vertigo since a couple of years. Before 2000AD, I believe.

It is not normal, most droids make the opposite travel ;-)

Oh right. Didnt realise he had a history stateside as it were.

Still, makes it even worse in a way that so few genuine 'newbies' have originated in 2k in the last few years.

Would be Future Shockers should note that nobody has made it into Tharg's Company from unsolicited Future Shocks for a very long time!

There was a day when you could be working in a  slaughterhouse one day and writing watchmen the next...

christophe

Dear Paul,

I think it is five writers to make their debut since the last year with Future Shock and Tales of Terror.

Ben Counter
Pete Gurr and Simon Gurr
Andrew Lewis
Gary Simpson
John Soanes

But I don't know if they are insolicited submissions

The Brothers Gurr and Andrew Lewis were the winners, respectively, of this year's and last's year's Dreddcon pitchfest competitions.

Not sure about any of the others.  At least one of those Future Shocks - the one about the mercenaries attacking the monastery - has been sitting in the 'use only in the case of emergency' drawer for a _long_ time.

So basically no one outside of the 'Big Five/Six' can write for toffee, or if they can, they bugger off over the water to better paid gigs ??
That's pretty grim if true.

Hi Christophe

No, there have been quie a few people who have had future shocks published, that in itself seems to be most peoples goal, but I was talking about people who have ended up writing for 2000AD regularly, i.e. they've had a series.

Is just a curiosity, because I wonder where they actually intende to get any new writers, there isn't really a british comics industry and that means bringing in people from other mediums, which may or may not work.

...Carey's run on Hellblazer has apparently now been increased to 14 issues (from the original 6), replacing Brian (100 Bullets) Azzarello.

Andy Diggle is also doing a 4-issue miniseries for Vertigo, spinning out of Hellblazer continuity ("Lady Johanna").

Dear Paul,

I am sorry I did not understand your sentiment correctly.

All the new writers have published *after* Simon Spurrier. Maybe they will pursue his footstep and make a series soon?

Hi Christophe, don't worry, I'm often vague.

I don't include simon spurrier either because his wasn't an unsolicited submission, but a competition winner (not picked out at random I must add).

Did the unholy trinity of Rennie, Abnett and Morrison start with future shocks?  If not then we ARE going back a long way?

Obviously there is NO reason why new writers should come from FS anyway.

Tiplodocus

I'm sure lots of writers out there are hurt by your implication that they are only "lucky".

To paraphrase Arnold Palmer; "The more I practice, the luckier I get".

Don't give up after just rejected two future shock submissions.

And as for the list of the "Big Six", what about Floyd Kermode? One of the most prolific 2000AD writers in years.
Be excellent to each other. And party on!

I don't think that's what I said, nor would I agree with it.

I think Andrew Lewis' Future Shock showed promise - and I remember thinking it sounded pretty good when I first heard it at the pitchfest last year.

There's also Simon Spurrier, of course, and a new guy called Jaspre Bark who's just sold his first Future Shock to 2000AD, and who's already writing for Warhammer and Dr Who.  I think he could be a fully-graduated scriptdroid of the future.

Rob Williams, who wrote Class War for com.x, is also doing at least one new series for 2000AD/the Megazine.

Some veteran droids do seem to be fading away into the wallpaper these days, but I still think there's potential new talent coming through to repalce them and keep the comic fresh.

I thought Chris Blythes future shocks were pretty good, that one in the bar wasn't bad either (can't remember the writers name).

I agree, I wouldn't say that going off to work in the states is necessarily a sign of a good writer.  I mean there's plenty of pants writers over there.
