What size were you thinking of for the comicartsketchbook website?

I'm thinking of working around 1000x800ish

Most computers these days have bigger displays so I think there's no nee to stick to the 800x600.

Still I'm open to suggestions, can any webby tech person suggest what is acceptable for modern web pages?

I already did. My comment above was the same thing I suggest when writing articles and books about web design.

1000px is, in my opinion, too wide. Browser chrome means you can never use the full dimensions of 1024 x 768, hence why I typically suggest 900?950px. As for height, avoid fixing that unless you have a very good reason for doing so. Because of all the shit toolbars people tend to add these days, you may end up with as little as 500?600px on a 1024 x 768 screen. Therefore, restrict the width of your design, but let the height be as large as it needs to be for each page.

950 wide is sounding about right, with 100% height.

Cheers, I'll get started into that over the weekend.

++ 20% of users on 800*600 ++

That many?

Hmmm. Astraw poll today showed that about a quarter to a third of the group still use 56k dial up.
Obviously you're not a golfer.

I still recommend to my students that they design their web-sites with the 800*600 resolution in mind - especially for commercial sites.  (You'll see that BBC, google, amazon and all the big name sites are viewable, width-wise, within those parameters.)

As Indigo says - height doesn't matter so much.

If it's a case of displaying large images, that's usually done as open on demand, in which case the user is free to click thumbnails in the knowledge that a big image is probably about to load up.

I should clarify that this is what I usually aim for, too. However, I've been doing work for publishers lately, who have access to screen-res stats, and their viewers were 95%+ on 1024 x 768; therefore, it depends on the likely users. To cast the net widest, you need to aim for a 750px width, of course.

Telling them what's going to happen is a good idea, obviously. Assumptions online are a bad thing. There are also useful alternatives to the pop-up for large images -- see http://www.snubcommunications.com/iceland/ and http://www.snubcommunications.com/popupgallery/
