I'm curious as to how they make it work dramatically - it's based on the true story of people who went for a swim, surfaced to find their boat missing, floated about a bit and then get eaten by sharks and/or drowned. Now, I love Jaws as much as the next man, but if you KNOW that the characters going to get eaten in the end (and theres nothing they can do about it) what's the fun in watching them bob about a bit for 90 minuts?

... well actually you don't know.

Art

What, they might be washed out to sea, never to be seen again, but it might end up happily in some way?

robbycox

I had no idea about Open water as i'd not read/seen any previews or hype of it anywhere. So i went into watching the film without knowing all the points about

the sharks and getting left behind and wotnot. right up until it suddenly ended i was still expecting a "hollywood" ending and was pleasantly surprised when i didn't get one.
cheers,
Rob.
ps - don't remember the full frontal nudity though! Must be getting old :(

So they float about and they die, and that's it? That's crap.

robbycox

Mmmmmm! when you put it like that then.....!

SPOILER TYPE STUFF AGAIN !!!!

Its supposed to be a true story, but actually the police think they faked their own deaths due to massive debt. So its not true at all, but around 90mins of watching peolple bob up and down thinking, christ I wish these two tossers would be eaten soon.

...In order to make it work dramatically they try and create tension out of the way their relationship breaks down as the film goes on rather than the sharks really. It works ooooookay, but Blair Witch was kind of similar and was done a lot better I feel. I can see Rob's point about the ending, it is refreshing that it ended the way it did, although after 90 minutes I was just gutted nothing had actually happened.
As for the nudity, it's at some point during the first 40 minutes or so. It's like someone thought "people are getting bored because we haven't got to the sharks yet! Quick, bring in the muff!!!" and hey presto the cute blonde from Grey's Anatomy leaps out the bathroom naked to save the day. That part was quite tense.

Spoilers...

I saw it essentially cold (though I did know about the full frontal nudity...) so was expecting a Hollywoodish ending as well. There are some pretty tense moments and the 'it's your fault' 'it's my fault!' bits work quite well... and the stuff at night stuff is really really tense. All the way through there's also this growing sense of doom. But overall it does not quite mesh together.

Keef Monkey

Yeah, I thought it had a lot of good ingredients, but the overall "meh" factor was quite high.

ThryllSeekyr

I don't think thta was the cute blonde from Grey's Anatomy, though I wish it was.

Keef Monkey

Well, I have it on good authority that it is. Namely my girlfriend, who watches Grey's Anatomy and has a keen eye for these things. She might be wrong though, in which case I'll take great pleasure in telling her.

Satanist

I hate these based on a true story films where everyone dies so no one knows what happened. See also that horror film set in the outback with the guy who looks like Alf Roberts but isnt.
Hmm, just pretend I wrote something witty eh?

El Spurioso

Precisely!  Open Water was a load of Old Dog's Cock for that precise reason!  The major "brrrr" aspect was that it was supposedly based on true events... and then you get right to the end and--

...and of course there's no possible way that anyone could know what actually happened, because the principal protagonists - who we just spent an hour and a half watch bobbing about and being sick - are never bloody found!  "Based On True Events" should really be changed to "Could Plausibly Have Happened... But Probably Didn't.  Though there's still a muff shot."

Load of arse!
