My favourite one was always 'The Mothman Prophecies' and its 'Based on actual reported events' schtick. Yeah reported in The Weekly World News a magazine which in its own small print basically states that it makes up its own stories or will print anyone elses made up tosh. Doesn't stop it being a fun read but makes any attempt to market the film as in any way 'actual' a little bit ridiculous.

Hats off to the Coen brothers though, who tagged Fargo as a true story just for the hell of it.

Me and Heather managed to enjoy that movie by making up lyrics to the theme music (which is repeated throughout). IIRC the lyrics go something like "oooo-eee-ooo-eee-ooo, it's the Mothman prophecies!".
