Easy now people...be nice...

Profit is a nice idea, but very difficult to achieve in the SP market...I would imagine!?!?!

El Spurioso

Fucking hell..  When did this forum get so fucking hostile?

If you don't like the deal the dude's offering (which is exactly the same deal you'll get with just about any other independent/small press publisher, particularly a new one), then all it takes if for you to ignore it.

This dude didn't do a thing wrong.

And these are decent chaps. I've swapped a few emails back and forth as part of a dialogue, and they are trying to right as best they can.

This is the first time they've put a comic out and they are trying to gain a foothold in a fairly competetive marketplace.

"Fucking hostile?" I don't know. Maybe. I liked what David said in response to my sceptism (hostility?) to what he was proposing, and I thought my reply to that was quite conciliatory, and so was Dave Brunt's. We could have ignored the post because we didn't like it, but when do we ever ignore anything that's posted here? I think it's fair to discuss anything that's posted in a forum like this.

The point of my argument was that Post Human is a new venture in an area many members of the board are familiar with and active in, and if the thread starter was someone I'd already heard of in that field (and I'm sorry for my ignorance if I should have heard of him), I might have more confidence in the project.

If it's possible to make money from small press publishing I'd love to know what the secret is, bearing in the commercial failure of Mamtor is documented in the current edition of the Megazine, and various anthologies we know aren't making fortunes for their creators.

I realise, when the point is to start a new company, it would be a wasted public relations opportunity not to say so; but I would have welcomed the news of an anthology comic to raise money for charity, however sceptical I might be of its money-making potential, if the charity anthology had not been linked so explicitly to the publisher's projected line of mini-series created by remunerated writers and artists. I think artistic contributions to a fundraising anthology should be solicited on the basis of the anthology alone - I don't think the projected mini-series should be dangled as a carrot to encourage talent to work on the anthology. The anthology should be an end in itself. In my opinion (obviously).

My understanding of the economics of publishing isn't perfect, and David Jones may know what he's doing - I certainly hope so. I'm genuinely looking forward to seeing anything that's published by Post Human, and I really do hope it's good, and if I think it is, I will say so.

Sorry if I came across as hostile, but David's pitch did rub me up the wrong way. I hate the idea of unpaid internships in any industry, and to me the small press shouldn't be about that - it should be about having fun, and talented people doing something creative and getting something in print, and putting it in their portfolio if they're serious about using it as a springboard to the professional arena.
STRIKE !!!

"Fucking hell.. When did this forum get so fucking hostile?"

It didn't, it's always been like this.
Did you know Christ was a werewolf?

Bolt-01

No it hasn't. Some people have had arguments with others that keep getting dragged up, but on the whole this is still a very open board.

Shut up ginger...it's always been nasty...grrrr....

DavidXBrunt

Like the estimable Ush it just rubed me up the wrong way. It seemed fair to comment on it, and I acknowledged the response.

I like Gingers.
