The Enigmatic Dr X

Saw this over Christmas. How does it compare to the graphic novel, which I haven't read? Is the plot the same?

For me the films a bit crap and as usual takes a very good source material and changes everything that makes it great.
The book is well worth a read.

I like the film, the only thing I don't like is William Hurt's portrayal of the crim brother. He's too much of a buffon to ever be a real one.

Strange to think that the ending of the comic is more Cronenbergian than than the film one.

The plot and characters are not hugely different.

Tom is completely different, in the film hes a reformed hard man and a gangster in the comic he does something in his youth that he escapes from. The film misses out on the whole of the middle part of the book which explains in a much better way Toms history of violence.

I agree the GN has a stronger storyline,. But the movie was still a brave, thought provoking piece of film making, on how hard it is to escape a person's violent predication.

It's in development at dreamworks with a scheduled release date of 2008 so it may never come out, who knows?

Bad Andy

I thought the film was much better than the book, actually.

I found much more characterisation in the film and it was slightly more believable than what happened to whatsisface in the book.

In fact, I'm not even sure if I enjoyed the book.

I was a bit disappointed with both, tbh.

SPOILERS AHOY!!!

The main thing that annoyed me the most (about the film) was that the most grisly scenes from the book (the chainsaw - the bloke who was locked up and tortured for twenty years - the finger in the key ring) were absent.
You would think that Cronenbourg would have loved commiting those bits to film.

Still by a long way the best Wagner adaptation were likely to see.

What does Wagner himself think of it I wonder?

In the spirit of the thread...

I just picked up the Exorcist anthology, including the canned paul schrader original prequel, for £12 in Asda!

I seem to be one of the few who rate part 3...

SPOILERRRRRS!

Funnily enough, I saw this for the first time last night, having only read the GN a few months ago.

I thought the bulk of the film was OK and, given the fact that you have to accept film is going to change some stuff, actually quite respectful of the source.

And then Viggo gets the late night phone call from William Hurt and I got the very real sense that the screenwriter looked at the GN and said:

"Jeez, I've got how much left to adapt? Fuck it, let's just stick in another gunfight and send the guy home.

"Woo-hoo! Finished two weeks ahead of deadline!"

Cheers!
