I got it for Christmas last year.

Brilliant stuff.  Special effects were very imaganitive (if not particularly effective).

We need a picture (or several) of Ornella Muti on this thread.

She looked even better walking away from you.

If I recall, she did some top class tiffin in Swann in Love (which was a bit of A La Recherche de Temps Perdu (sp)).

There's something very special about watching tiffin in "legitimate" movies and telly series rather than porn.  Given the choice of edited highlights of Alex Kingston in Moll FLanders or Debbie Does Dallas, I know where I'd put my money.

Some costumes / spiecal effects were just on par with Doctor Who.

Not good for a motion picture.

Was't quite as polished as Star Wars.

I was very impressed with the lighting and back drops. Particurly the multi hued liquid cloud effects happening in the sky.

In retrospect the Buster Crabb version of Flash Gordon was alittle more thorough being a television series that must have gone for few seasons. It used be on televison every morning before I went off to school.

Most admittedly the speical effects and such were worse in this version but over all it had more charm. I guess people wouldn't expect too much from the Black and white film it was shot on.

That's why a lot of people like it, it's camp, fun, completely unlike Star Wars and has a charm all it's own.

Hail Flash.

'Fraid not, squire.  The B&W Flash Gordon serials were cinema releases from the 1930's, three serials of about 12 episodes each (I think) in total.  Like you, I watched them on telly over the Christmas holdays back in the late 70's, when I was all-ablaze with pre-video unrequited Star Wars fever.  They were bloody awesome, iguanas and sparklers included.  But the camp excesses of the modern version should never be underestimated, especially the thrill of watching Blue Peter presenters geting poisoned by spidercrab-things.

Does anybody have a picture of the lizard men. ( From the motion picture , I mean.) They were awful.

When Flash was fighting the Jungle Prince on the spiked platform. You could plainly see those spikes were rubber.

Klytus's death scene, the way his face got squished.

Utter cheeseiness.

But I still enjoyed the movie when I was ten years old.

Now in Australia we used to have a early morning kids show called Boris's Breakfast club. Boris who is otherwise a talented magician wore a mock up of a Knight's undergarments . Coloured black, A black hood and a touch black face paint. A self styled black knight. Really, just imagine a cross between a ninja and one of those medievil jesters. Assisted by two puppets Aggro ( Originally the Animal the drummer from 'Electronic Mayhem' of from the Muppets.) and O'toole the Monkey. Two hours of the host bantering around with his assistant and the camera crew. Music videos ( I only remember the same Barry Mannilow song being played over and over again. ) A cartoon or two. ( Of course this was when I first start watching He-Men, Mask, She-Ra, Transformers.) Towards the mid eighties, there was a long run of the Black white Flash Gordon and Buck Rodgers which had me hooked for long while.

What was saying about the old Flash Gordon in black and white being more thorough. Well it would have been obviously. Like you fit more stuff into a season or two than can be fitted into nearly two hours of motion picture.

I'm not dissing the movie. I still like it. It does have it's moments. I fact I've just dug out the family copy. Perhaps, I will watch it tonight. Transfixed by all the stunning visuals. It's groovy soundtrack. One of my other favorite scenes, The beginning. It's good when you see something that is normal.  How flash is just a champion football/gridiron celebrity, who's then suddenly on his way to save the Earth. He meets up with the Jungle people and the Bird people. Sealing alliances with them and hoorah, he has defeated Ming the merciless.

Great stuff. In a cult movie type of way.

Movies just aren't made like this anymore.

But I have seen better.
