Albeit a quite small exhibition, old British comics are getting a bit of publicity here in the North East. The stuff on show is from former Beano and Dandy artist Keith Robson's own collection and also some of his original artwork.

It's opens at the Museum of Hartlepool tomorrow and runs till 2nd September and is free entry.

I might go to that.

Mind you, Hartlepool...

Off topic  but :      Did anyone ever see that  Art Droids  2000ad exhibition at the V+A in 2001   .     It was a  Rufus Dayglo  collection [or part of it ]    .     It was a bit on the small side because of this.

Hi Peter,
The exhibition at the V&A was supposed to be in the year 2000, to celebrate 2000Ad IN 2000AD.....

But they messed up... so we ended up using a smaller  space in the Print gallery..... in 2001. Not ideal, but we did the best we could.

It wasn't huge, but we had work up by Ezquerra, Ron Smith, Hicklenton, O'Neill, McCarthy, Ewins and a whole McMahon story (the Vampire Effect) along one wall.

I staged a bigger show in the West End a couple of years ago, called Zarjaz. Which was more comprehensive.....and entirely free.

Hi    .   I did enjoy it anyway +  went twice to see it,  so thanks for showing it all.       I think i have a couple of  those  programmes in the plastic bags.

Ah yes, the V&A...

Managed to get to this about 15 mins on the last day of the exhibition and was totally blown away by the artwork on display.

This was the first time I'd seen any sort of collection of comic artwork (apart from the stalls at UKCAC) and was hooked.

First time I heard of Rufus Dayglo too... I remember thinking 'how the fuck did he get all this artwork!'

I've met Rufus several times since (and donated a McMahon page I picked up at said UKCAC to his collection, well more sold than donated, it just seemed right he should have it) and asked him 'how the fuck did you get all that artwork?'.

I think he said something along the lines of 'by giving them (the artists) all my money'.

I'd love to organise something like that for Belfast, but never seem to get the time or know where to begin.

it was the first time i had seen art close up as well.     A similar thing happened when i saw the artwork gallery here and thought where the hell did they get that art from.   It was good in a way because at least you knew where it was.

I went to the V & A exhibition in 2001. I didn't realise it was that long ago.

I visited it on a Friday and then went to the Great British Beer Festival.

2000AD and lots of beer. That's a good way to spend a day.
Dumb all over, a little ugly on the side.

Yea I saw this on the local news last night.

Might have to pop along to that.

COMMANDO FORCES

At last my home town has a comic event.
It's just a pity I live 294 miles away and have a life now. I might have went if there was Dredd/2000ad stuff there but then I would have to see my family!!!!!
Having just read that article I am amazed there was no mention of The House of Tharg. Disgraceful.
