the shutdown man

To be honest I preferred the idea of the Queen laying eggs to the turning-into-an-egg system. I can buy that an Facehugger can lay something in your stomach which will then grow and burst out, but I just don't see how they can make you turn into an egg with a facehugger inside.

Having said that, one of the many original scripts for Alien3 is online here: http://www.horrorlair.com/scripts/alien3_gibson.html

And it's pretty interesting reading, including the Alien's method of breeding this time around; spreading through spores, and totally converting their host. Would have made a better film, methinks.
You're at the precipice Tony, of an enormous crossroads.

A pox on double posts! Why does this site have no edit button?

I think I prefer the queen idea too. When I saw that extra scene in the director's cut, I didn't even pick up on the idea that Brett had been turned into an egg. I just figured he and Dallas were cocooned. (Although in hindsight I see where the egg idea came from particularly looking at Brett.)

It wasn't until looking through the web that I came across the Brett-egg thing, so I'm curious if that is just fan theory or what was originally intended.

It's an interesting idea, but I prefer the alien queen one too I think. I guess the original makes it even more alien in some ways but it just seems overly complicated.

That scene is good in other ways though, particularly in establishing a small plot hole in the original story. Particularly the scene just after Dallas was taken when the big guy says"There's no Dallas, no blood, nothing."

Knowing how aliens kill it struck me as odd that they'd find no blood, but the extra scene in Alien at least explains this.

Overally I like the new scenes in Alien, but I think they work better when viewing ALien as a stand alone film, if that makes sense. The original release works better with the sequels. After all, even if Dallas and Brettt weren't being turned into eggs, why were they then cocooned? A larder maybe, something to eat later?

Originally intended.

It's supposed to be the perfect organism - self replicating means that with only one alive it can reproduce as long as it finds hosts.

Thursday

I'm not convinced I'm remembering this correctly, but the Alien novelisation had Dallas in a cocoon and (I think) said something about how each drone can directly implant one host, without having an egg/facehugger around - no mention of turning the victim into an egg.

I think it also said that a host implanted by a drone will produce a queen, but I wouldn't swear to it - it's been about ten years since I read it and could be entirely wrong (but hey, these here's the intarwebs; being correct is an optional extra).

I'm remembering the novelization  similar to you Thursday except I seem to remember the Alien could produce One Egg at a time(take a while to produce the egg) and would keep doing this untill a queen was spawned.  But like you I read it quite a while ago.

I didn't realize there was a novel adaption.
Was the original film based on a novel or vice/versa?

They are novelisations of the films, written by Alan Dean foster. The first one is great, but the subsequent one's are largely by the numbers retellings of the plot.

Haven't read the Alien novel for many years- but there's an awesome scene in it where one of the crew (Dallas?) traps the alien in an airlock or something, and it loses an arm.

Bolt-01

Nerd moment!

That is a partially filmed scene in the first film. Think one of the mags from the time had a shot of the ALIEN in the Airlock, minus an arm on the cover (I've got that so I could poss get a scan if needed) Think the reason it wasn't used is that it gives a bloody good look at the monster too early on for Scott's liking.

The Navigator alien driver of the crashed ship turned up in the comic books, and if I remember correctly, they were expecting it to their saviour, but it turned out to be something quite nasty too.  In a more calculated way than the Alien though.
