If it irritates you so much then don't buy the product!

I really do not get the animosity people have towards Lucas. How dare he try and make money from his creation!
Jesus, you'll have Marvel producing spin-off X-Men comics next... then next thing you'll know there'll be movies and toys and games... how very dare they!

"How dare he try and make money from his creation!"

Making money from his creation is one thing, but putting the same thing in a different box year after year and calling it a slightly different name just irritates me.

Generally a film gets a DVD, and a special edition, that's it. I don't know how many combinations of box sets of original editions, special editions, ultimate editions of Star Wars they've brought out, and there's fuck all difference between them, they're just lazy cash-ins.

It wouldn't even bother me so much if Lucas had even done anything else worthwhile in the meantime, but no, he's just been "that Star Wars guy" for 30 years.

I'm sure Indiana Jones and ILM count as achievements also...

And even if they didn't- so what? If I only did one thing of note in my life, and that was as world shaking as Star Wars, then I reckon I'd be resting on my laurels a lot more than Lucas is.

And if you dislike the Star Wars dvds, you must LOVE what they do with the Star Trek ones!

I look on Indiana Jones as Spielberg's work more than Lucas'. I'm not even that big a fan of Star Wars to begin with, so that's probably coloring my views here.....

As for the Star Trek DVDs, what exactly have they done? I know there are special editions for all of them (I have the good ones, I'll leave it up for debate which they are). I've nothing against special edition DVDs. It's just when any film, or director, or studio starts milking it that I don't like it. If a film releases a special edition DVD with a good load of extras, I'll buy it. But then, six months later if they release the same film on an "ultimate edition", that's milking it. I won't buy it, but I'll still feel like they were trying to rip me off.

Star Trek dvds are release with the same, if not greater, frequency you berate Lucas for! TNG has just had yet another release in a 20 anniversary box set or some shite.

I agree with you on special editions though- I've got to the stage were I'll rarely buy a dvd when it's first released, becasue I know there's an extras pack edition for the fanboy like me waiting to be released just as soon as the first release sells out.

Ah, the TV shows. I thought you meant the films. Yeah, I haven't bothered buying any of the Trek TV shows, mainly because there are just too many. Maybe someday when I've got money to burn.......

We seem to be on the same page about special edition DVDs. I'll usually try and check ahead to find out if there's one planned before I buy a DVD. One thing I liked about the Lord of the Rings was that they made it really clear in advance that the normal edition's coming out in summer, and the 4-disc is out at Christmas, so I waited. If only they all did that.

Och...
You might want to give a spoiler warning next time.

I just read that bit, and thought ( that when I actualley go see the movie)..." Damn that surpise ending might have more impact if I had not known before hand.'

Richmond Clements

To be fair, ThryllSeekyr, it is a pretty old story, most folk might just know what happens in it...

TordelBack

Good job you didn't read my Gilgamesh thread, TS!  Enkidu dies right at the start!

Noisybast

Grendel's death is only about a third of the way in, Thryllseeker. There's still plenty of surprises in store.
Dan Dare will return for a new adventure soon, Earthlets!

Ochs

Sorry, that bit is pretty early on and as it's information on the film makers publicity blurb I didn't think it would be a problem, besides it is a thousand year old story. Apologies anyway.
Fear leads to doubt which leads to the worst case scenario.

ThryllSeekyr

Of course, I know this story.

I have this old Brimax book of 'Ancient Myths and legends'

So, I sort of know the story well.

What I didn't know is that Grendel reverts to a baby when dieing.

Although that concept isn't original either. I would never thought of combining both this story and that concept myself.

On this message board would be the first place and time I heard of it.

Unless anyone could prove to me that Grendel was a ensorced baby in the original tale.

BTW I'm not upset by this, but like I said in my last message.....

Floyd-the-k

I've read the original too Dudley, but don't remember Grendel's mum looking like a naked Angelina Jolie with a tail. Not that I'm complaining, mind you.

By the way, is this fillum child friendly? If I take my seven-going-on-eight year old boy to see it, will either of us regret it?

Tiplodocus

My seven year old loved it but I think it frightened him in a couple of places.

The first attack of the Grendel is absolutely horrifying stuff with horrible shreiking, screaming, flashing lights, dismemberings, impalings, and bodies being torn in two (mostly in shadow and not bloody but still, I thought, a bit strong).

If nudity bothers you, Angelina is very naked but blank (if you get what I mean) so that just washed over Tiny Tips - "she was naked and covered in gold") was how he described it.

There's some fruity language and shots of cavernous cleavage which make it slightly bawdy in places.

But the main things he remembers are the fights with the monsters, in particular the dragon.

So if he likes dragons and monsters then he should be OK.

I traumatised him a few years back by taking him along to see King Kong.  A couple of sections of that were really the stuff of nightmare for a 12A - my fault, should have checked more closely.   But also got stung by ZATHURA (the space house game thing) where the relentless noise, screaming and monsters in shadow turned out to be a bit too much.

Be excellent to each other. And party on!
