thanks fellow parent of a seven year old.  I think Roy wants to see it for the violence.  I want to see it because I like anglo-saxon poetry, not for the naughty gold covered ladies. Really.
By the way, has anyone here read 'Grendel by John Gardner? If not, I recommend it. It's the Beowulf story told from Grendel's point of view

I got to thinking that seeing as this latest adaption mess's with the original Poem/Epic. I might add some suggestions that further
alter the story.

I think Beowulf could easily turn out to be Grendel's father. Considering that the appearance of Grendel's mother is based entirely on that of Angolena Jolie. It's very likely that Beowulf and the beast's mother met once before on a much earlier occasion during one of his early adolecent wanderings sowing his wild oats.

Now, remember, I only say this on the strength that over time. A story that is told rather than written down. It can change to often please the teller and their audience and also through bad translation.

Besides, this might give Grendle abit more incentive to find his out who his father is and act out some of that abandonment agression. he later finds the man who turns out to be his sire.
Instead of fathe sone re-union and because Beowulf only see's a monster and is frightened. he attacks. Grendel raids, attacks, murders as he blames this man for the way he is.

I could imagine the dialoge of that one.

As Grendel confronts Beowulf. It growls 'Hey you poked my mother'

As the startled man facing this beast doesn't understand.

But alas, I have not yet seen this movie. I was thinking of going to see this last night. ( Tuesday at the movies is always half-price.)
I might wait awhile longer and I hope to see this one with some friends.

I saw a model of Grendel's mother on play.com...
Hang on, I'll just find it....

POSSIBLE SPOILER AHEAD

I haven't seen the film yet, although I have seen a clip with the gold naked Angelina Jolie. Have to say that creature doesn't look much like her does it? I'm wondering if she changes (i.e. an illusory seductive mode, and a monster mode if that makes sense.)

Anyway should find out if I watch it. I hope this turns out to be the case anyway. I'm not against attractive looking monsters, but Grendel's mother wasn't depicted that way in the original poem. Come to think of it I don't think her appearance was described at all (it's years since I've read the poem) but she was no sex siren.

Having just seen the film, I'd highly recommend it. They mess about with the story a bit, but then again the story was pretty simple in the first place. It could have been messed about with far more badly.
I didn't like Grendel being all vulnerable - he came across as just a musicophobe at first, something I can sympathize with after last weeks party next door, which kept my child awake at 4am

Beowulf looked pretty damn hard though - I'm practicing my gravelly voice and sit ups

ps can someone remind me how to do the spoiler cover-up stuff?

PJ is right; it's as though they could only afford the software to make Ray Winston's body look hard - the rest of them were as flabby as the savages in Blakes 7

But without the spaces, obviously

I was ambivalent about Gaiman's, if it was Gaiman,  changes to the story. On the one hand, it's not a very coherent story in the original and he did a pretty good job. On the other hand, it seemed a bit silly, this bit about stuffing up the kingdom just so you could boff Ms Jolie standing up in a cave. The women were tiresomely terrific; good characters, showing how noble they were by putting up with those awful men and all their macho shaggery, and of course the wife showing her feminine wisdom by being friends with the girlfriend

Just saw this one last night and thought it was excellent veiwing.

I don't care much how the story had be messed around with as I was also alittle surpised at how close to the mark I was when I said that

One. Beowulf would be having a sex scene with Grendel's mother. Although it's not hard to imagine as she was well animated and I the thought gold covering what little of her figure left nothing to the imagination anyway. Grendel's mother presents a more exotic choice ofvariety to Hrothgar's wenchs. Besides I think Beowulf has a pechant for lady monters.

Two. Even when I added as a after thought and a joke that Beowulf might be Grendel's father.

Well, even though I wasn't exactly on the mark. I still think I was very close and concerning what transpires after Grendel's death. Aha, aha!

I won't give any more the story away though.

Although I may offer my interpretation of what may have really happened in the plot to this film. If someone might show me how to use the bars that grey out what ever you don't people to read by mistake.

I was surpised at how much I enjoyed this film, even when I know I might have fallen asleep during the session( which I didn't.) after having such a long day since also saw the movies 'Golden Compass'.  More of a children's flick. and 'AVP Two'.  Definitly not for young children, but surprisingly better than it's predessor and with a really cool ending.

Strangely there is some weird continueity betweent these three different fantacy films.

The CGI effects, how the films 'Golden Compass', and 'Beowulf' started were both set in the snow. Bodies disappearing when when coming into contact with a blue liquid from a vial ( AVP Two.)or the tide from the northern sea. ( Beowulf.) Bodies disappaering in clouds of golden dust. ( Beowulf and Golden Compass.)

All three films containing monsters or aliens and some of them shapeshifters.

Similer themes used.
