Obviously, the top two are the wrong way round, but I think it's a pretty good list, with a couple of nice entries for us:

IndigoPrime

Surprised to see Hellboy so low. Surprised to see Usagi Yojimbo and Vladek Spiegelman (from Maus) in there, but happy about that. (Way more people should read that book.) And for those looking for 2000 AD characters, check #27, #18 (kind of a surprising entry) and #7.

Amusing that 16% of people voted for the #1 ranked character to be rated higher. Apparently, at least 16% of Empire readers are total morons.

COMMANDO FORCES

Well I voted for 2000ad's characters to push them towards their rightful place at the top ;)

We should all vote for those Twoth characters, it's our duty.

Mr C

Never trust anything that says the Joker's name is Jack Napier. Still, nice to see John Constantine at 3, but where the hell is Rocket Raccoon?

For the love of Tharg, don't read the text accompanying The Saint of Killers unless you've read Preacher to the very end. Actually I'm a bit wary of reading any of them now.

Eric Plumrose

Unsurprisingly, the list got short shrift on the JBF.
Not sure if pervert or cheesecake expert.

But... didn't he get a name check somewhere on the list as 'comic legend' Johnny No-teeth or something?

I would have thought that would have massaged his infinite ego enough.

Byrne didn't contribute to the thread. It was a few American members of the JBF that dismissed the poll simply for being British.

Hard to fault that logic, eh?

Twats.

Also if you plan on reading Stephen King's Dark Tower books, make sure you don't read the text after the spoiler warning in the Dr Doom entry first. I'm warning because they don't leave much space after the spoiler.

Keef Monkey

Not a bad list, although they could have handled the spoilers a bit better. Thankfully I've read Preacher and The Dark Tower but accidentally glanced at the Rorshach spoiler and I'm currently halfway through my first Watchmen read, so hoping it isn't a massive spoiler. Didn't seem to be so I'm going to try and wipe it from my databanks and hope for the best.

A list of the 50 greatest comics characters that doesn't include Dennis the Menace* is bollocks.

*The proper one, not that crappy American one

Likewise, I refuse to recognise any list that doesn't include The Spider.

Desperate Dan, Korky the Kat, Bash Street Kids, Billy Bunter, Kelly's Eye, Thunderbolt Jaxon, Major Eazy, Charley, Johnny Red... all AWOL. And this is a British list?! Bah, I say.

(Actually, it's not all bad. Some nice choices represented among the dross, like the Mekon, Captain Haddock and Halo Jones. Hope is not yet lost.)
