I, Cosh

I wish it was possible to ignore an entire thread in the same way as a user. I can't stand seeing a single unread icon on the front page!

Of course, making a big deal about being ignored is guaranteed to encourage some people to ignore you. Just saying.

And you could, at any time, make it so that nobody ever even knows that they're being ignored at all.  Still- where's the fun in not making people feel alienated, eh?

Just saying.

As much as my own borderline ocd and not so borderline masochistic personlity makes me obsessed with statistics like this, I do just see it as a bit of a laugh. (still only one, must try harder). If people are genuinely upset or feel the need to make a big deal over it, maybe Matt's right, and it should be removed. How difficult would that be, as a matter of interest?

About a minute and a half.  Probably.  Of course, to be fair, I think I only mentioned it this time last year, so it's not like anyone's really had the time to do anything about it yet.

Yep, really can't see any plus side to being told how many people are ignoring you. As Matt says, this point has been raised several times in the past but to no avail. Is there any reason or explanation why it can't be done away with.

CrazyFoxMachine

Agreed. I feel a petition growing.

It is rather tightly stitched into the forum software but there may be a setting deep in the admin panel somewhere, although I have just nosed around and found nothing on it either in the documentation or with anyone asking how this is done. It might be because it is simple or it might not be possible or it might require the equivalent of wedging a screwdriver down the back and wiggling it until it stops working.

It does seem a scab people can't stop picking at, so I'll see if it is the first option. If it is the second one well... and the third is tricky because it can prevent easy updating or the updating just removes the changes or it could make something else go wrong.
if I went 'round saying I was an Emperor just because some moistened bint had lobbed a scimitar at me, they'd put me away!

Dont get rid of it on my behalf as i like knowing how many i am ignored by.I commented on it once a while back but otherwise its not an issue.

Of course the fact that i commented on it once was misconstrued by others as myself making a big deal out of it when it wasnt.

In case anyone cares what I think; we should allow people to see how many users they're being ignored by. If it's a lot, perhaps they might get the hint and stop being so annoying. Or go away.

The only real downside is when people whine on and on about how many people are ignoring them.

But in that case you can just ignore them.

Emperors answer is kind of what I half suspected, that it may be 'built in' if you like, but I wasn't sure, which was why I asked the question.

I for one am not that bothered, so if it's gonna cause hassle and disruption...

I like seeing who's being ignored and by how many. The way I've been schooled to act on this board has shaped my opinions of newcomers and I can see why there is that amount of people ignoring whoever.

I don't think its entirely unfriendly knowing you are being ignored. It cuts through a load of hassle working out if you are being ignored.

I vote against stopping this knowledge.

I agree with JK- if you have lots of people ignoring you, you probably need to do some soul-searching to find out why.
People ignore folk who's posts they find irritating, if you don't want to stop being irritating (which is entirely your own choice) then you have to put up with being ignored.

I just don't get why anybody would even think to include it in the first place.  Maybe I've just been lucky up until now, but I've never seen it anywhere else- and I was particularly surprised to see it here.

I certainly don't agree that people are necessarily ignored for reasons that 'they ought to think about' either.  Think about here, maybe- but not necessarily anywhere else.  It can be very easy to have your face not fit in one forum, while you're King of the InterNetz in another- and once it's clear that somebody is ignored in reasonably high numbers- who's ever going to take that person seriously?  Who's going to wander in for the first time, have a look at the membership, and give that guy an honest chance?  Knowing that they aren't particularly well thought of might even do more harm than good to a person's general demeanor on the board.  Speaking personally, I can't imagine I'd be moved to be a 'better person' if my ignore count was in double figures.

Maybe we could add a 'dead popular' function as well.  That way, we can all know who's really, really cool and worth paying special attention to.

Whatever.  Do what you like.  The fact that this thread exists at all ought to clue you in as to what you should probably do though.

phew.. not been posting in days but picked up another.. no need to change the sig!

Personally this board is totally relaxed and friendly and baffled by the compulsion that drives people to hit ignore.  None of you seemed to ignore the the recent return of Scojo - much preferring to read and rip into what he said.

Maybe my new ignorer can pm me and explain what terribly offensive post i've made.

oh.
If I'd known it was harmless I would have killed it myself.

I dont think i need to do any soul searching as i know myself pretty well and i dont expect to be popular and i dont have a need to be liked by everyone.

I am ignored by 10.

Who are they ?

Why should i care ?

Its never been my intention to irritate or annoy anyone and considering those that are ignoring choose NOT to be upfront about what the problem is then there really isnt very much i can do about it and i am not about to start second guessing what the problem is because its not important and i dont get why anyone would take it personally.

If someone is upset or whatever about being ignored and they say so then it might be kinder to them to explain why they are being ignored because its important to remember that its entirely subjective and simply saying "stop being so irritating etc" and getting the hint isnt really the most intelligent or helpful attitude to have when the individual who is being ignored might not have a clue.

Try talking to them instead and be adult and open about it and they might thank you for pointing it out.

Give it a try.
