Was it this series?

I bought that issue for my sins, and never bought another.  Muck of the first order.

Trust them to f**k things up again!

Blimey! I must admit I can't remember this at all. Must have missed it and by all accounts I didn't miss a thing. :)

I think we are talking more these rather than DC. Well I am anyway.

Those weren't that much better, especially when they became (lack of) Quality Comics, which had the habit of recutting/resizing art, and even leaving the past bit of a story off, especially when it only covered a half page. Awful, awful stuff.

Ah, but they were accessible and affordable in a way the Titan albums weren't.  I first read the whole of Block Mania and the Apocalypse War in Eagle reprints bought from a newsagent beside the hospital my sick granny was in.  My enthusiasm for visiting was inspiring.

I bought the same ones second hand for about 50c each when I was unemployed and broke. So no complaints from me either

They were worth it for the covers alone.

Oh, I agree. I bought a whole pile of these, including the second Nemesis run (with some of the worst cover art I've ever seen), loads of Dredd ones, and a handful of others. As I got older, though, I was increasingly narked with the poor repro, dreadful cutting, and so on, and luckily chanced upon a (dearly departed) comics shop in Aldershot that had piles of 2000 AD Monthlies for naff-all. Now _those_ were good reprint!

I got caught skiving by my dad while sitting on a bench reading the eagle block mania issue. Speech bubble "Looks like block manias hotting up". He never did tell my mum.
And the covers were absolute Bolland class.

IAMTHESYSTEM very specifically brought up the idea of new Dredd material by US creators to try and sell the character in the States, which is what prompted me to bring up the DC Dredds, since these were an attempt at this very thing and which were, charitably, not very good.

Cheers!

Arh the irony of those terrible things being called 'Quality Comics' is wonderful!

John Byrne wrote one of those DC Dredds didnt he? The one which rewrote Judge Morphs "end" IIRC and otherwise missed the continuity and spirit of the character - though arguably in no worse a fashion than the other writers who had a pop.
