Go Jim that's fantastic recognition and well deserved too.

That was interesting! I did a bit of artwork a short while ago for the Ezquerra project and ended up using a rectangle for my speech bubble. It was a robot speaking so I didn't mind, rectangular or  hexagonal speech bubbles often being used to designate AI speech patterns. (Mind you, I'd think robots in the future would be able to speak with normal voices but there you go.)

I did it using the rectangle tool,( poorly it turned out. I should have given much more margin for the text. If you've see the cartoon with the saucy robot nurse* you'll see what I mean).

I felt slightly embarrassed as I figured proper letterers probably used proper designated speech bubble tools.  So seeing Jim drawing speech bubbles using the eclipse tool was interesting. Makes sense though as often these things often part of art packages and splashing out on an extra package to do just that isn't worth it. (Unless it's a free online tool perhaps.) I was actually using Manga studio which does have a bubble tool but I, um, couldn't get it  to work.

*I opted for a simple slightly Beanoesque cartoon style because my art is a bit rubbish at present. In my defence I tried some shadowing as well but my attempt at cross-hatching on the inner legs of the nurse made her look like she'd had an accident, an oil leak so to speak. I rubbed that out...

Wednesday surgery:

QuoteYou may think you know about setting type, but you don't -- I still learn new things about typography  almost daily and I've been designing for print since 1994.

There's no point in reading the section about creating balloons of the text you're going to put inside them looks awful! It's the text that people are going to read.

Love it! Even on his own blog, he has to mod himself - He'll be calling himself a cunt and banning himself soon!

Jim has posted some pages to practice lettering on!

http://clintflickerlettering.blogspot.com/2010/12/thursday-surgery-unlettered-pages-with.html

I mention this as a sneaky way to bring up the fact that anyone who wants a bit more practice can feel free to plunder my blog for unlettered attempts at the 2000ad sample scripts. Jim's practice pages are all nice and professional, but with my art you get to practice the inevitable event of lettering for an amateur who hasn't yet learnt how much space to leave you; a much needed skill I am sure!
