Truly appalling events in Japan this morning - I know many boarders have family and friends in Japan and around the Pacific, and I sincerely hope that they have escaped the worst of this disaster.

It's horrendous. Luckily my wife's direct family members are okay but some of her relatives/friends live in the worst-hit area and so far nobody can make contact with them.

There's a flyover motorway just beside where my father-in-law lives and he said it was shaking so bad he thought it was going to come down.... jeeeeeeeeez....

My wife's family don't live too near the affected areas but she has friends near Fukushima. Haven't heard from anyone yet as we're both at work.

Looks awful on the news though.

Shocking pictures coming through on tv of the wave spreading inland.

Friends of ours were due to land in Tokyo a few hours ago. Just been diverted to Osaka. They'd previously been in New Zealand during that quake...

Terrible footage of the tsunami racing across the Japanese countryside, it's difficult to comprehend the destructive horror. I really hope everyone's loved ones in the area are OK.

SmallBlueThing

We've been watching the footage open-mouthed today. Even my eldest, who finds news unwatchably boring, was heard to utter 'oh my god' at the shots of the tsunami racing inland. Have we ever had footage of that kind before? Shocking, and as said above, i know there are many boarders with friends and family in japan, i hope everyone's okay.

I'm a bit freaked out by this terrible event because...

Two or three days ago I was on the BBC News website while in bed before getting up for work and I'm sure I saw on the news ticker thing near the top of the page that there had been an "earthquake in Japan, measuring 7.9"
I told my girlfriend about this but there was nothing on the news.
When I got to work that day I told my boss about it, as he is going there for a month in August, but still there was nothing on the news.

And now it happens! Bizarre.

Dumb all over, a little ugly on the side.

The footage on the bbc website is just beyond belief. Massive, huge amounts of rubble just eating up the landscape with no stopping it. There's fires burning in this floating mass that is just washing over everything. You can see cars on the roads moving along as this is rushing towards them...can you just imagine driving along and seeing that coming at you?? I don't know about the fatality rate but the damage is going to be astronomical and its going to take a hell of a long time to clean up after it...

Utterly terrible. My thoughts are with the Japanese people and anyone with friends or loved one in the affected areas.

To tell the truth, you can all get screwed.

One of my uni friends teaches English in Ibaraki, pretty close to the affected area and right on the coast. He's not an especially close friend of mine, but he is in my social circle - I was just talking to him on facebook yesterday in fact.

Very much hope he's able to get online soon and put everyone's minds at ease.

There had indeed been another earthquake earlier in the week measuring about 7.9. No damage was reported as a result of that one though.

Ahhh, strange I couldn't find any reports about it at the time as that is still a large quake. I guess no damage means it doesn't make the news.
