LoD, if you haven't read them can I recommend you also take up the offer of the Hugh Cook books? I read them a long time ago but really enjoyed them a lot, as they went against the usual fantasy tropes and were big, mad, dirty adventures.

China Mieville has spoken very well of them and wrote the introduction to the recent release of the first book.:

Cook was a fantasy writer whose 1980s and early 90s decology Chronicles of an Age of Darkness, though hidden from the attentions of the middlebrow lit-snob by their wizards, dragons and high-kitsch covers, are intensely clever, humane, witty, meta-textually adventurous and pulp-avant-garde works.
