New Comic Book Day Megathread

Just got round to reading Punk Rock Jesus #5 of 6 from a couple of weeks ago. 

This title is so annoying - the art is head and shoulders above most titles out there at the moment.  The main themes and dialogue definitely let it down though.  Page 6 and 7 are a great example - an amazing concert double page spread showing Chris J2 as lead singer, and describing his band members.  The descriptions of the band members were so corny though that it almost spoilt the art. 

I'm glad I have kept the title on my pull list and I'm looking forward to the conclusion.  It could/should have been much better though...

Yeah. Punk Rock Jesus is gorgeous. And its general concept is pretty cool. But its like a college freshman's interpretation of complex issues like Religion, Corporate Greed, Terrorism, and Rock Music. Its all very simplistic in its presentation, and doesn't seem to want push its themes further then the most obvious.

But I will say, the slight attempt to make the head J2 guy somewhat sympathetic as his world crashes down around was a nice piece of character development of a one-note character.

NEW COMICS SHIPPING THE WEEK OF 12-05-12

My Physical Pulls
CYBER FORCE #2 - First issue felt like a bit of mixed bag, I though its last few pages were a bit confusing and rushed. But its kinda cool. Also Free. So that helps. I'm sort of become a bit of Matt Hawkin's fan recently, his other Top Cow series Think Tank is really good.
FAIREST #10 - This story arc is interesting in that its really showcasing Japanese Fables. But something sort of fills off about the whole thing. Looks nice though.
GUARDING THE GLOBE #4 - I feel this book is really getting into a good groove. It really helps to have a stable art team. Love Wolf-Man. Also Brit.
HELLBOY IN HELL #1 - I preordered this thinking I'd be caught up on Hellboy by now. But that's not to be. So this will be unread for a while. Also I'll be switching to digital on it with issue #2.
INVINCIBLE #98 - I'm real curious about what this arc is actually going to do. I'm really excited about Invincible again. Also last issue was a real WTF moment issue. Blew me down.
STORM DOGS #2 - First issue didn't do much for me. We'll see where it goes this issue.
THE HYPERNATURALS #6 - One of my top 5 new series of 2012. Its that good.
THE TRANSFORMERS: REGENERATION ONE #86 - DINOBOTS! Nuff' said.

The draw to Cyber Force was the cost for me too but I think it's been a good two comics thus far. The art is good and there's enough action, exposition and intrigue to make it a worthwhile pickup & one I'll definitely continue with.

Pretty fun hail this week. I'd say The Massive (7) was once again the highlight. I know this series divides people but I love it. Having established its world, themes, characters and atmosphere patiently and satisfyingly over the last 6 issues it feels like we're moving ahead with the meat of the story now. Great stuff.

Elsewhere I've discussed how good Battlefields: The Green Field Beyond 2 was as were Action Comics 15, so Morrison if written by anyone else it would have felt like someone doing an over the top parody. Batman 15 echo'd back to both Morrison's Arkham and Moore's Killing while retaining enough of its own to be really good. Swamp Thing, Animal Man and Frankenstein 15 all proved that just as I think the whole Rotworld thing must surly have run its course there's still fun to be had. The new Caligula mini's first issue really cared on as the first did, over the top nonsense not quite masking the quality of the story. Planet of the Apes: Cataclysm 4 continued this series fantastic story, lovin' this, really must watch Beneath again. Earth 2 #7 had one brilliant scene and one a bit forgetable. It Girl 5 continued to be great fun and Creator Owned Comics 7, while I don't enjoy Killswitch (I must read it again as one when done) the rest was on fire this month, gonna miss this when its gone. Batwing is my bit of fluff, but still enjoying it even if Nicieza doesn't seem set to really do justice to its setting.

Overall great bunch of comics and probably the much praised Saga which I got in trade and have discussed elsewhere was the biggest disappointment. I wondered how it could live up to the reviews and the answer is it doesn't!

Planet of the Apes: Cataclysm is great fun, though I wonder if in being a prequel story that addresses one of the most obvious questions about the original movie ([spoiler]why Taylor or the others don't recognise any familiar celestial bodies[/spoiler]), it might veer a little into the Fan Wank Zone.

My Print Pulls
DARK HORSE PRESENTS #19 - Now that Aliens and Concrete Park are over, perhaps I will be more statisfied with the current offerings. Still good, but I'm not digging it as much as last year this time.
FABLES #124 - The grand finale to the Bufkin of Oz arc apparently, which as been running as a back-up for the last year. Pretty neat, very nice to look at.
LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES #15 - Francis Portela is back on art chores, and I'm going to miss Scott Kolins and his short run. I still like this series, but its nothing great. But Keith Giffen is coming back to do art and co-plot very soon! So it could be great very soon.
MULTIPLE WARHEADS: ALPHABET TO INFINITY #3 - Just complete madness. I love it.
SAGA #8 - Looks like we're getting how our leads met this arc... you know, I can't seem to recall the parents names. That's usually a mark of a series that is boring me and I'm about to drop soon. But I love this series. So why can't I recall their names? Baffling!
SUPREME #67 - Okay, look. This series is just amazing. Next issue is the last issue and you owe it to yourself to check it out. Its unfortunate that such a phenominal comic isn't getting the sales.

My Digital Pulls
BRAVEST WARRIORS #3 - Created by the same folks who gave us Adventure Time. This comic is a cross promotion with the new Web Toon series. Its really goofy fun that hits that magic balancing act between cute and raunchy. You should give the webtoon a watch. Its free.
EMPOWERED SPECIAL #3: HELL BENT OR HEAVEN SENT - I just started working my way through the Empowered graphic novels, and I have to say its really fun stuff all around. Reading it digitally has been a treat, and so convenient. I probably won't actually buy this one-shot for quite a while, but its nice to plug the series. Adam Warren is a pretty good artist, yes?
JUDGE DREDD #2 - Not entirely sold on this yet. The first issue felt like the most humdrum of Dredd filler, and its back-up 2nd feature was just atrocious. We'll see.
NUMBER 13 #1 - I didn't buy the #0 of this, because I have the issues of DHP it ran in. But I liked it enough to give the ongoing (or is it a mini?) a chance. More sci-fi post-apoc madness, with some really sleek art style to back it up.

NUMBER 13 #1 looks like it's worth a look in.

The Death of the Family saga continues in full force so bunch of bat titles for me this week. Is no one else picking any of the Marvel NOW! titles up?

Is no one else picking any of the Marvel NOW! titles up?

Been toying with getting a few, but something always comes along to put me off, a dodgy review, an interview with a creator that makes the premise seem a bit wonky, or that reminds me how detached I am from Marvel these days.

Still there's a couple I'll probably have a go at in trade, so if anybody has anything to say about any of the following I'd be interested...

Indestructible Hulk - well its Waid and Waid rarely goes wrong, but the concept...

X-Men Legacy - I've not read a new X-Men book in years (like over 20) but this all seems very un X-Men and more like Spurrier's good 2000ad stuff... but the reviews haven't been kind so I've not taken the plunge.

FF - Love, love, love Mike Allred and while I've not read much Matt Fraction at all, I hear good things BUT, again reviews are wonky.

Savage Wolverine - Love the Savage land, but don't get on with Wolverine and Wolverine in the Savage Land with Shanna seems so blandly by the number for Frank Cho. I figure if I don't get it there's an infinitesimally tiny better chance we'll get more Liberty Meadows.

Wolverine - I think it doesn't have an adjective. I love Paul Cornell, I love Alan Davis, but I'm so mah about Wolverine I can't seem to get myself excited about this even with that line-up.

I said to myself (and to the forum!) I was almost done with Marvel after AvX (apart from Daredevil and X-Factor), and would be giving the Now! titles short shrift. Inevitably, I've ended up buying or intending to buy lots of them, though my X-title purchasing is way down from pre-Now! days.

Iron Man - Kieron Gillen has rapidly cemented himself in my affections as one of the best British writers of non-British comics out there. But the art... well, it's Greg Land. He does what he does, and it certainly provokes extreme opinions. In fairness, Iron Man is probably quite a good use for him. I'm not totally gripped by this one, but I'm giving it a chance - I expect Gillen to win me over.

Captain America - Despite my newfound dislike for the character, I picked up the first issue 'cos of Rick Remender. Not bad, very Kirby-ish, very compressed - all good. Romita Jr's art has been better though (loved him in his Daredevil and Iron Man days.)

Fantastic Four - A bit dull really - I love the FF, but this hasn't grabbed me.

FF - Probably the superior of the two titles, in part because of the oddball cast, and in larger part because of Mike Allred. We'll see how it goes - I kinda wish Fraction wouldn't worry so much about using offbeat or stylised narrative devices and just tell a good story without endlessly figuring out different ways to tell it. I blame Bendis for this trope.

Indestructible Hulk - Not as good as Waid's Daredevil - not convinced the art's a great match - but it's a promising start. I mean, it's Waid - I'd read almost anything by him.

Wolverine - Will get this, even though I really don't like the character any more. Cornell should be able to get me back on-board.

Thor, God of Thunder - Some are calling this the best of the Now!s. It's certainly very strong - gorgeous art, good hook, excellent writing from Jason Aaron. Very solid start.

Young Avengers - Not sure if this is out yet, but it will inevitably be wonderful. Kieron Gillen on a teen team - I expect this to be a sleeper hit.

Cable and X-Force - Bought this 'cos Forge is in it and 'cos the lay of the land post AvX actually gives me a situation whereby I would squarely be cheering Cable on against the authoritarian Avengers. But it's written very much for the trade - issue 1 doesn't actually make the plot or central concept clear.

Avengers - Visually very stylish. The Avengers team is about as oddball as it gets, and the presence of Sunspot and Cannonball will probably make me hang on for a bit, but I wasn't that keen on Hickman's Fantastic Four, and this seems very much in the same vein.

Uncanny Avengers - For the flagship title of the line, there's a pleasing amount of eccentricity to this. Not amazing, but readable.

Superior Spider-man - Complete faith in Dan Slott will be enough to get me buying this, even though the central concept is as-yet unrevealed (as in, who Spidey is. Doc Oc? Merged Oc / Parker consciousness? Completely different character?)

I can't really go into too much detail about Thunderbolts #1 as it's just a set up comic grouping the team together other than to say the art is a bit "meh"; the whole thing has a very static feel to it like waxwork superheroes where posed then drawn, nothing feells like it's in motion.

The Indestructible Hulk #1 faired much better, from the previews I was expecting Banner's voice coming from the Hulk but that's not the case. He's not fully in control and explains to SHIELD that they should use his intelligence when he's Banner and point him at something to destroy when Hulk. Thoroughly recommend trying #1 out. Only other ones I'll be following is Superior Spidey and the two Wolverine NOW! titles.
