Uh. I'm really not sure how I feel about DHP at the moment. There have been some brilliant comics lately (Gamma springs to mind. When the one shot collection comes out 2000AD fans should check it out). But now that Finder has ended I. Honestly not as excited about the title any more then I was. I'm not buying release day any more and paying the full $8 rice tag. I wait a month and pay $4. Which I sort of feel bad about, but I just can't spend that much on something that's not lighting my world on fire any more.

NEW COMICS AVAILABLE THE WEEK OF 05-01-13

My Digital Pulls
47 RONIN #4 - Really digging it. Stan Sakai own zone. Though I can't wait for Usagi to come back. Which will be soon I hear.
2000 AD #1830 - Check out that old school cover copy.
MISTER X: EVICTION #1 - I'm a big fan of Dean Motter, but I'm sorry to say I'm not caught up on Mister X. The HC collection was just way too expensive, and Dark Horse has yet to release a digital edition of the original material. I did like the strip that ran in Dark Horse Presents a little while ago. And I LOVE Electropolis (one of the books from my early days that made me a real comics fan incidentally)
FAIREST #15 - Not caught up I'm afraid to say. I really should get on that. I keep waiting for a week with some extra cash to get caught up, and then I spend it on something else.
THE HYPERNATURALS #11 - Penultimate issue to one of the best cosmic super-hero yarns. Things have really been happening lately, all my worries about a predictable final threat were soundly put to bed. I will never double DnA again.
INVINCIBLE UNIVERSE #2 - First issue was great. Hester and Nauck can do no wrong.
SAVAGE DRAGON #187 - Really neat coloring style going on this issue. I wonder what that's about.
SONIC THE HEDGEHOG #248 - When Worlds Collide keeps rumbling forward. I find it interesting that writer Ian Flynn used a temporary in-universe soft reboot to sort of smooth out any ongoing continuity from cropping up in this crossover. Instead we get Sonic and Mega Man's history at its most basic, instead of the actual Sonic and Mega Man characters as they appear in their on-going adventures. I'm sure this makes things a bit easier for writing the casts of both universes together, and how Wily and Eggman intentionally pulled it off is quite interesting. But I can't help feel a little bothered by it. Other then that. Its fun on a bun. This issue is the gratuitousness 'heroes fight each other' scene we've all been waiting for.
WEEKLY SHONEN JUMP #21 & 22 - Apparently Jump will be taking a week off next week due to Japanese holidays, so this is a double issue. Except its not double length (not that you really need to double its regular 200 pages of content I suppose...). It just counts for two weeks. Guess I'll have to pace myself reading it.

Looking forward to reading a collected edition of The Hypernaturals one day soon Adventurer.
Don't go posting any spoilers!

sheldipez

Just checking through comixology for the first time due to purchase of new phone and shocked to see that they're same price as physical comics.  I just assumed the "physical" tax would removed and be buck or two cheaper. Do they ever reduce in price or are they this way to not piss off brick n motar stores? Thought I'd might be checking out some digital after all.

They tend to reduce in price after a few weeks. I find it ridiculous as well, particularly when  - with Comixology - you don't even get to own the product you've paid good money for. The fact that I need to be online to read it is ridiculous, and if Comixology crash (like what happened last month) or even go out of business, that's your whole collection down the drain.

I use the Dark Horse app sometimes. I'd rather comic companies offer DRM-free downloads at a decent price; if that were the case, I'd be spending a lot more money now that I've got a tablet.

sheldipez

Ah thanks, looking at Miss Fury or Sonic The Hedghog as two quick examples their back issues are $1.99. Will have to keep an eye on pricing. Still all a bit bonkers.

The Adventurer

While there is definitely some protecting of brick and mortar going on, but its my understanding that because of the cut that Apple/Google takes selling through the App the cost savings of publishing digitally actually is quite small compared to physical distribution. Its not a great situation, but if you're 100% digital like me, its not a big deal because you'd be spending that much anyway. And if you're patient, you do save a buck or two in a months time.

Preacher, two things. You don't need to be online to read your comics. You can download your comiXology purchases to your device and read offline. In fact if you're reading on a device, that's the only way to do it because the Browser based reader doesn't work.

As for ComiXology going out of business, I just don't see that happening. Also, its my experience that if a publisher pulls out of ComiXology (like Dark Horse did, when they went with their own app) your purchases from that publisher are still available to you (I bought an issue of Hellboy early on, which is no longer available for sale. But I am still able to download it and read it at will). so that bodes well for future availability foreseeablity...

As for 'crashes', the Marvel 700 thing was a bit of a debacle. But its not like there's never been an even that prevents people from getting to their local comic shop for a day or two, or not being able to buy new releases (Diamond!). A minor inconvenience that everyone learned from, so its less likely to happen again.

That's one of the things I guess that digital has going against it. As its a progressive step that people have to move to it has to be 'better' than what's gone before, be that cheaper, more reliable, more convenient etc etc for people to make the transition. Digital natives, as I believe young folk are referred to in such parlance, won't 'cos to them its the default choice and therefore the comparison is non-existent and irrelevant.

The comics market is, to a great extent (I think), still made of non-digital natives and so it needs offer more, or there is an expectation it will? So comparisons that say, its just like print from shops won't often carry the weight they need, to encourage people to make the move, which has to be a positive choice.

I could of course be talking out my arse, but that's the view I hold. I have attachment to stuff and a move from stuff has to have advantage, or more likely, a number of advantages to make me stiff from stuff to, well none stuff.

sheldipez

The subscription model of this marvel unlimited seems much more to my liking but appears no Android support for it!

I'm really not a fan of Mavel Unlimited. Its more of a Netflix format, where you definitely don't own anything. You're just paying for access. Also, as I understand it, you don't get any recent releases. Just Marvel's back catalog which is nice I'm sure. But not for me.

Some observations on Comixology pricing I've made over the past two years;
Living in the UK or Eire means that digital will not be exactly the same as 'same day as print' price- it will be a little bit cheaper due to currency conversion.
You can save a few pence / cents by buying the comic off the Comixology website (not through the iOS or Android App).
DC & Image always drop their prices by a Dollar one month after print.
Marvel don't drop their prices until several month after print, but hold a minimum of two nicely priced sales every week (every Monday & Friday, sometimes weekend also, depending on the 'occassion').
There are a huge amount of free comics available on Comixology: almost every Image number 1 (including Saga, Graham's Prophet, Storm Dogs, Fatale, Bedlam etc).
Marvel, DC, IDW, Valiant and many others also have some great free comics available.
Marvel normally give away three free random digital comics every Tuesday (but haven't for the past fortnight for some reason).

As mentioned above, having a comic downloaded on your device means you won't need an Internet connection to read it.
ComiXology is by no means perfect, but a great platform. I honestly can't see it ever going belly up.

And y'know you won't really own anything forever anyway, digital or print.

A cynical man would point out that that this is basically the same thing as going to a search page for a fileshare site like Rapidshare, only RS is free, you get to download and keep the files, and it hosts recent issues.

I'm after a bunch of comics to read during breaks or lunch at work and bunch of old marvel issues would hit the spot very nicely. I don't think I really want to pay this kind of premium, (essentially 30p less than print for new releases) per digi comic. I've read a few freebies on comixology today and guided view mode is neat but it's not fair comparison to print as the Android app doesn't seem to support HD comics, Android buggered over again! I don't consider comixology purchases as you actually owning them either so again I'm fine with a subscription which I'd lose access too once stop paying.

I'm going to keep eye on it though, may end up buying some and deffo will grab free ones.  Thanks for input everybody, apologies for de-railing this thread a bit but know a lot of you guys know your stuff with digi comics here.

Oh yeah. I really wouldn't recommend reading comics on phone-sized devices. I tried, but even with guided view... its just not very enjoyable.

When I got my iPad though, it all changed. So great.

Well this weeks Haul (a big 3 week 'un) was interesting. Two more DC issues get the chop. Earth 2 12 isn't a bad comic by any stretch, but just like the series as a whole its not great and the characters don't grab me enough to justify continuing to get it. Batwing 20 I thought I was going to give this a bit longer into the new run, but no, everything I like about this title has gone and it aren't coming back, so no point dragging out a slow miserable death! Elsewhere Palmiotti and Gray strike out twice this week, with a very poor Jonah Hex   19 issue, don't hear that too often, but while last weeks rushed to a close, this weeks just jerked things around 180 straight away and it really didn't work. Moritat's art I normally adore, but he doesn't do the superhero thing anywhere near as well as he does the western thing. Still we'll see where we go from here (well we know that, but...) as this one will return to form soon I'm sure. Luckily for DC Wonder Woman 19, Animal Man 20 and Batman Inc 10 were all on fine form so its not all bad there.

Elsewhere Li'l Depress Boy 16 sadly, but probably sensibly calls it a days as a ongoing in its current format. Great comic, with a really nice finale this issue but the creators want to get things ticking over better. Fingers crossed we don't have to wait too long to see how they handle things in the future. IT Girl and the Atomics 9, The Massive 11 are both steady by their standards, meaning very good, Black Beetle 3 was superb as was FF 6. East of West 2 just about does enough to keep me coming back. Its not exceptional, but its pretty good and will probably get past the 3 issue try out period. Pick of the bunch is Planet of the Apes - Cataclysm 9 just a great comic in a great series.

Edited to add: Oh yeah got The Victories 1 as well, liked it so much I bought the mini off eBay which I was meant to be trade waiting!
