This may make me a social leper, but I love the Alec Baldwin film, The Shadow; it's suspenseful(apparently that's a word), funny and exciting. Yes, Tim Curry may appear hammy, yes, its plot is not earth-shattering and no, it doesn't have massive effects, but Curry is perfect for it, and its self-awareness is very rare for this kind of film. In short, it is good. If anyone disagrees I may drop a saucer.

I, Cosh

The Shadow is a great film and your post has thankfully defused my homecoming urge to make needlessly offensive posts in other threads. Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men indeed!
We never really die.

The Shadow is an ace film that alas did not win too many oscars. ;)

It did however help me when I was very sick with food poisoning. I'd had two days of puking and everything else when I watched the Shadow I began to feel better. So I always watch bits of it when it's on. And the taxi driver sidekick is the gifted Peter Boyle who also appears in my fave X-File episode Clyde Bruckman's final repose.

The Justice department has a good re-education programme-it's called five to ten in the cubes.

Saw The Shadow on it's initial cinema release in 1994, liked it then and even more so now, there's something so gloriously nostalgic and old fashioned about it, and is a sorely underrated little gem, Alec Baldwin is an intensely charismatic actor (he was robbed of an Oscar for Glengarry Glen Ross - the greatest cameo in movie history) and would have been a tremendous Bruce Wayne/Batman, in my humble opinion... speaking of which, does anyone else notice some story similarities between The Shadow and Batman Begins, the Eastern origin sequences in particular, or is it just me!?

I agree, Beaky, Alec Baldwin is good. The connection with Batman Begins is quite overt, I never thought about that before, though I must say my only knowledge of The Shadow is Howard Chaykin's reprised version, reprinted in "Zones" and an article I read(maybe also in Zones), so I don't know how much of the character's background was laid in stone before the film.

Is there any way of convincing anyone that was intended?

I realy like The Shadow too. I even love Tim Curry losing his mind and foaming at the mouth. And yes, Baldwin is great in it and in Glengarry Glen Ross. I don't suppose I'm adding much to the conversation, just wanted to show my support...

Incidentally, the only other version of The Shadow I've come across is the Bill Seinkewicz (spelling?) comic from the late 80's. The only thing I can remember about it is someone was murdered by having their eyelids surgically removed and then being strapped to the roof of a building on a hot day which also happened in a recent Dredd strip in the Megazine.

Can't remember the writer but I'm sure they must have 'paid homage to' (nicked) that scene.

Regular occurence in Glasgow so it's in the public domain rather than being a homage.
Be excellent to each other. And party on!

Fabulous film, i love the 40s noirish look. Russell is an amazing director, i love the sweeping shots of the city as we follow the message cannisters etc, and of course the late great Jerry Goldsmith did an *outstanding* soundtrack for this.

been hearing about a Sam Raimi version for years (he's a huge fan, you only need to check out Darkman's look to see that), doubt it'll ever come to be.

Talking of Darkman, I've always thought that the plots of Darkman, Robocop and The Crow are virtually identical; baddies kill bloke, bloke gets new power through death, bloke uses this power to get revenge on baddies.

Found my great definitive aticle movie blog entry on The Shadow. If 'The Shadow Blows' isn't the best summary you've ever heard you may not know the studio went with 'The Shadow Knows'.
