Meanwhile, the newest shiniest Dredd to arrive in the bookshop for the obsessive completist has bloody Inferno and Muzak Killer in it (also Hottie House Siege to provide some sugar coating for this bitter pill), and next up, presumably as the movie is opening, is Judge Tyrannosaur and Book of the Dead (also Bury My Heart..., but jeebus wept, strange bedfellows).

Judge Tyrannosaur's in 19, so at least it's out of the way already.

Ahah, thanks for the correction.  I flicked through a copy yesterday (failing to note Judge Tyrannosaur), and actually 19 doesn't look as bad as I thought it would.  Some very shiny art, must say I was sorely tempted.

In this week's chapter of Thrillpowered Thursday, the story behind Simon Fraser's return to Nikolai Dante in 2006. Have a read!

Today's Thrillpowered Thursday looks at the debut of Kingdom and Stickleback, and, because I felt like writing something other than a thousand-word gush about two series that I love, complains about Tharg's silly use of British broadcasting vernacular to describe funnybooks.  THIS IS SRS BZNSS.

Uh that series vs. stories stuff really tripped me up!

"Looking over 2000 AD's wonderful and busy history, can anybody name another prog in which two such amazing and excellent stories debuted?"

Zombo and Cradlegrave rather teasingly started a Prog apart and so probably not.

Now there's a challenge. I suppose you could say Prog 86 (Strontium Dog and Ro-Busters) but that kinda feels like cheating since neither originated in the prog.

Great piece Grant.  There's no question in my mind that Prog 2007 was one of the high points of 2000AD's entire history.  I loved everything about Kingdom from the first page. However the decision to run what were obviously structured as two episodes as one 'extra length' opener, when combined with the restricted vocab, gave a false initial impression to some squaxx of repetition, and I seem to remember quite a bit of negative reaction.  It's heartening that almost everyone came around to the strip's charms toot sweet.

As to my feelings about Stickleback, well just check out the username and avatar.  Top of my want list for a return to the Prog.

The Adventurer

It did take me a few installments of Kingdom for it to gel with me. At first the slightly boring title (and title font) sort of sabotaged my expectations. But it was quickly apparent this was going to be amazing. And it was.

And continues to be.

Yeah, having read it for the first time in trade form the narration did feel rather repetitive to begin with; a bit like in the old-school strips where they'd reintroduce things every single episode, but actually more jarring, because the reprints of early material preserve the prog breaks while modern collections strip them out and present it as one long continuous story.  But Kingdom managed to leave that element behind pretty quickly and soon got even more awesome.

I've never warmed to Kingdom. I don't know what it is, but theres just something about it which fails to really engage me. Its certainly not bad, but I struggle to get excited about it.

Stickleback on the other hand is one of the best strips to appear in the Prog for a long time. I really hope it makes a return soon, as its been far too long since we last saw it.

In today's entry, I take a look at the beginning of the Volgan War and, briefly, at the Low Life story about the Nazi babies.  Have a read and let me know what you think!

The Adventurer

I will say I marginally enjoyed the Mills/Langley ABC Warriors more then their Slaine output. But not by much. It still seems a lot of noise and fury, without much substance. Also I think it suffers in the serial format, being intended for Album format. Shoehorning one format into another never really works out. IMO.

Low Life: Baby Talk was awesome though.

Paraphrasing.

Dirty Frank: "Brace yourself Mortal! Dirty Frank's mind has expanded to a level beyond! I can't hear your every thought!"

Mortal: "Frank, I said those things out loud. This device isn't even real, its just a traffic cone with a light bulb stuck in it."

Dirty Frank: "Oh."

And that page with Mortal's origin? Priceless.
