Maybe they are hedging thier bets? They really enjoyed it but are aware that when the more mainstream reviews start pouring in they don't want to be seen to have been overly enthusiatic about it maybe? A 3 star review or a 7 out of 10 is a good middle ground for saying both 'We told you it was great' or alternatively 'Yeah it sucked but with a few good bits'.

The most pleasantly surprising thing about Dredd is the sheer lack of bad or less-than-positive reviews it's received thus far... when's the last time that happened with a genre - ANY genre - film?  With such strong word-of-mouth and highly (near-unanimous) positive buzz, I have a real confidence about Dredd's prospects at the global box-office... if it equals the 1995 debacle in overall numbers (17 years of inflationary monetary increase taken into consideration), it's going to be a resounding success...

Strong in this thread, the deja vu is.

(Seriously, folks: there were about ten post-SDCC reviews, and they were all linked early in this thread. Check the date of reviews you're posting; if it's on or around 12th July, or if the review refers to SDCC, then it's been posted.)

Fair enough, though I see no problem in re-posting a link to a good review that's been posted before. There are 20 pages to wade through here....

There's very little in the way of links to actual reviews of the film after Pg5. Near as I can figure, if it didn't come out off the back of the SDCC screening, it's embargoed until release. (At least, that seems to be what kiboshed the SciFi Now review that appeared, then disappeared, a couple of weeks ago.)

4 out of 5 in The Star On Sunday, reviewer Andy Lee calling it" The coolest comic book movie of the year".

The Empire podcast is an interview with Urban rather than a review, which will come next week. The guy who wrote the Empire print review is the guy who hosts the podcast, so it's likely to be a largely positive recommend.

It's a great podcast, that.

I do think the Raid comparisons are mostly irrelevant, and it's disappointing to see so many critics going down this route.

It's true that there are one or two striking similarities in the premise of both films but in terms of plot and action they're vastly different. The Raid is first and foremost a Martial Arts movie, and exists very much in that world, whereas Dredd is a different beast. In terms of script, world-building and characterisation there is really no contest.
