Cheap, yes that'll be it. That'll be why they use him as their regular cover artist- not any editorial respect for his talent. And that'll be why they use him each and every month.

As i say, i really like the new starburst, and their use of his covers is part of that. It's not a style to everyone's taste, but it successfully distances the new iteration of the mag from the nasty old version, and from most other film mags on the shelf.

When I first saw that cover I wasn't keen at all. But looking at Ian Welch's other Starburst covers I find that I like the stencil/spray paint feel of his work. No way do I think that Dredd image is to the standard of his other covers though.

It's a brave move to use such an artist on all Starburst covers. Makes a change from all the other covers on newsagents shelves so I commend Starburst for that. Why does every magazine cover have to have photos? I guess because they sell but will Starburst have much of a chance against all the samey looking film mags or would it be best for it to carve out a little niche for itself?

More people seem to be complaining about the Ian Welch cover than the variant cover. The latter in my opinion is the stinker but less people in this world seem to be bothered by bland.

(I think Dez Skinn designed the variant cover – note to editors: do not design your own front covers – we saw what happened with the Meg many years ago).

Heck, I will check out this magazine. I am curious.

Wanted to modify that last post of mine. There is enough about that cover that I do like and it has grown on me. Doesn't mean I am nuts over it, there are elements I think should have been done differently but a bold move to use it.

It's not about taste - it's about being able to look at something and discern if it's the work of an amateur or a professional. I can appreciate an accomplished piece of work even if it's in a style I don't like - but this isn't the case here - it's just amateurish plain and simple.

Okay I have now bought SFX and Starburst and here are the contents.

SFX #226 £4.50
There is a small pic of Joe on the cover on the left side near the bottom.
There is a three page article on pages 9-11, which is a chat with Alex Garland. This is mainly pictures and the writing takes up less than one page but we do find out that they thought about filming in Glasgow (I do hope that is true).
On pages 80-81 there is an interview with Karl Urban, again the wriiting takes up less than one page but karlurbaninternational will really enjoy the full page pic on 81. I like the way a billboard in the distance has 'LAW & ORDER' on it.
On page 116 we get the review of the film and it's all good, 4.5 out of 5.
On the rear cover is the latest poster, which looks good all glossy.

Starburst #380 £3.95
This has two covers. The one that only SBT loves and a variant one. We get a decent amount of stuff in here (I will be reading all this later).
He is the Law - A complete history of Judge Dredd 3 pages
Dredd creators speak - Wagner, Ezquerra, Mills & Grant 3 pages
Mega-City Bomb 2 page look back at that other film
Directing Judge Dredd 3 page article from issue 202 with Danny Cannon
Judge Dredd - Lawman of the Future 1 page article about the younger comic
The Dredd Interrogations 5 page article talking to Alex and Lena

Out of the two mags the Starburst one is easily the better one to buy, just not that awful cover one ;)

Really enjoyed the starburst articles if not the cover. The complete history of Dredd does tail off around the mid nineties though iirc (it's not in front of me) and kind of ends, then after judgement day lots of other stuff happens, oh and there was a recent epic called Day of Chaos.

I forgot to mention, there is a review in Starburst on pages 62/63 and it gets an 8 out of 10 rating!

One interesting piece you will all enjoy reading (now that I've read it) is the creators bit on pages 12/13 and it won't take long. Why not pop in your local and read it, it's interesting

Last of the V8's

Issue 14 of Comic Heroes out today.
Small pic of Dredd on the cover.
6 page article on the movie inside ''Dredd Blooded''. Nice little sidebar in which Garland talks about how the fanbase on this board helped influence the film.
''Free'' 36 page Dredd comic with two stories, Mutie Block by Wagner and Walker and Meat by Williams and Teague.
£7.99 feels better value than usual.

Last of the V8's

Issue 71 of SciFi Now out next week. Fringe on the cover.
Dredd coverage has the movie poster on inside front cover, 6 page Dredd article ''Dredd Reckoning'' and 3 page John Wagner interview including the writers five favourite Dredd storylines.
The Dredd movie is reviewed and gets 4 out of 5 stars.

Thjat 'history of Dredd' article in Starbusrt is obviously written by a long-term fan, but from memory rather than meticulous research. It's alot more accurate than a lot of similar articles I've read but there are one or two mistakes - "during the Judge Child Quest Dredd meets long term allies Judges Hershey and McGruder" and "Dredd has his eyes gouged out by a zombie version of himself". Minor quibbles in an otherwise very good collection of Dredd articles.

Tiplodocus

DREDD 3D gets a shout out in the "Things to do this month" page of the Official Nintendo Magazine.  Apparently the staff are all keen to see it.
Be excellent to each other. And party on!

Zarjazzer

Featured briefly in todays Metro buy witha pic of Judge Lex not Karl Urban.
The Justice department has a good re-education programme-it's called five to ten in the cubes.

Weirdly, Total Film has a different, 3 star review of Dredd in this months issue.

I've messaged them to ask why they didn't print the earlier, Comic Con review in which they gave it 4 stars...

What? It was Empire that gave three stars, and total film with four stars? Different reviewer??

Would be surprised if now Empire give it 4 stars!
