I think that it is a ballsy strategy.  JD has greater name recognition in the UK, and the more good word of mouth that comes out of the UK release will just bump up the street cred for the US release.

Yeah, with instant web-connectivity, word of mouth has never been a stronger factor. The US movie establishment will always bend whichever way they perceive the wind to be blowing, and Dredd was always going to get best buzz in the UK, so I think this is a good idea. A couple of weeks is just enough to  build up some rep, and then hopefully enough box office to make a bigger budget sequel.

I know that the reaction I have been getting from younger people about this film has been stellar.  I know it is purely anecdotal, but a lot of younger action film buffs like the hard paced action of this as well as the fact that it is reputed to be a good movie in its own right.  Throw in the street cred that comes with it being an underground (in the states) comic character with a rich history, there is a lot to be hopeful for.  But we shall see...
