So I just found out that Commando has a iPad app. As its one of those British comics I've always been curious about (especially since its still published) this is kind of a big deal. But I don't really know much about it. I get that it caters to war comics specifically, but is it worth reading? Does it publish new material, or reprint old war comics? The app came with a few sample issues, one is clearly labeled as a reprint, but another isn't.

Also, is this a small comic? The sample comics are really small on the screen, like... really small. I sort of get the sense that Commando might actually be 'ash-can' sized normally. So that's... different if the case.

EDIT: Like, there are some previews on their website of the latest issues, and the Previews are small too (if you go to full-screen mode). Is that how big they are physically in print?

THIS SPACE INTENTIONALLY LEFT BLANK

Yeah, it's an ashcan-sized comic. I've never bought it but flick through it sometimes in Smith's. They release 4 issues at a time, all reprints of older stories. Some of it looks fairly interesting but not enough for me to make a purchase.

I'm pretty sure they release two reprints and two new ones every month, although this may have changed...

I thought it was eight title a month, but having a look it seems to be four. Half the titles are reprint and half are new. I usually pick up a few of these a year, Commando have broadened their stories from WWW2 only to take in the occasional Vikings and Pirates. John Ridgeway does some as does Alan Hebden.
Some good stories, worth a look.

They publish four issues at a time, twice a month, so there are eight monthly issues. I think half of them are reprints. In terms of storytelling, they're kind of basic - very plot-heavy, not much in the way of characterisation, very linear - no flashbacks or changes in point of view - and quite heavy on the narrative captions. Art is variable. Gordon Livingstone will turn up quite regularly in the reprints, and he's brilliant - all slashing brush lines and blocks of letratone. Some European greats like Victor de la Fuente as well. Carlos Pino and Keith Page do a lot of the new ones.
