Most Tedious Prick - everyone on Twitter saying "Oh yeah, Dredd is just a rip-off of The Raid" as if they're the first person in the universe to notice the plot similarities.

I'd be willing to bet the majority of them haven't seen The Raid, and were just copying everyone else to pretend they knew what the fuck they were talking about.

great idea...  thanks KARL for giving us a DREDD to be proud of

On the subject of Karl not getting the recognition he deserved, the same is true of all aspects of 'genre' or 'high-concept' entertainment. Even with its modest (in movie-terms) budget, how many people worked on Dredd? Hundreds? Production designers, stunt guys & gals, costume designers, weapons designers/advisors, prop designers, technicians, pyrotechnic experts ... the list goes on and on. All of these working their butts off to create the illusion of another world, and yet, films which purport to be about 'real life', with little imagination or flair on display, manage to clean up in awards events.

Now, I'm not taking away from the work of films which require less people to work on them at all, but does anyone else find it annoying that so many critics and "film fans" will snigger at a film because it's bigger, even though so much more work and imagination has gone into it?

Something I've been thinking about for a while now, just thought I'd put it out there.

And to get back on-topic, Karl Urban's performance is one of my favourites from 2012.

we could always do something special here for KARL etc..... to show our app as a fan base .. Recognition that he did a good job of DREDD   (portrayal )  :)

The Justice department has a good re-education programme-it's called five to ten in the cubes.

COMMANDO FORCES

There are the Taurus World Stunt Awards, I'm sure some of the stunt crew could feature in some of its categories!

Agreed.

Thing is, the similarities between the films are only really at surface level. I'm lucky enough to have seen The Raid and at no point ever does Dredd feel like a rip off in anyway.

Besides, didn't Die Hard do it before all of them?

As Brad Jones put it "Dredd IS the best action movie of the year, but if it's going to be compared to anything else this year, why not make it another great action film?!). He's refering to The Raid there, his 4th fave movie of 2012, Dredd took top spot. Brad Jones is a small time critic best remembered for his internet comedy series The Cinema Snob but he can be a really nice guy and has a fair and just opinion on most movies he see's.

btw, The Raid is a great movie and is well worth seeing. Probably the best film I saw in 2012.

I watched them back to back at the cinema the other week - and the similarities are undeniable, to the point where you could quite easily make a splitscreen, shot for shot trailer (I'm actually amazed no one has done this yet!).

BUT... Yeah, in terms of actually watching them they really are notably different films. The action and tone is totally different.

As a way of thanks, I'd vote for Karl and Alex being written in to a Dredd story.....

A massive thank you to Karl for his stellar performance as Dredd (can't imagine enyone else in the role now) and also to Langley Kirkwood as lex who's speech when Dredd is shot is up there with Rutger Hauer's blade runner's tear drops in the rain.

Emp

Watched the Dredd movies back to back recently and of course the new one is far superior.

Urban will sadly never win any awards for his performance but should be rewarded.....Zarjazzer posted the question "What could we do?"...well there is an answer to that...

The board is graced by people who have portrayed Dredd in 2000AD and who share a love of the character. So why not a board whip round for a commission for Mr Urban....it may not be the same as an Oscar and it might go in the bin but at least we show our appreciation.
