Remind me who the Valyard is please. Is he the 13th Doctor that was a villain in the Colin Baker era?

It's all right, that's in every contract.
That's what they call a sanity clause.
You can't fool me, there ain't no sanity clause.

Crying again!  Why?!?   ::)

Still, John Hurt though, eh?   :o

I thought the Doctor's crying was very powerful.

And Hurt- yes! Texted my eldest after and he said, "It was great, he turned round and f**** it was that really famous guy!"
I think we can all agree: job done.

The split season was announced well before filming started. Nothing to do with BBC Wales and their ability to get work done.

BBC funding comes mostly from Licence fee. However it also congress from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (olympics!) and Department for Work and Pensions as well as grants for BBC World Service (that are being withdrawn). So the split was budget based primarily.

The Olympics cost BBC a lot from their budget. The Jubilee also took a chunk. BBC knew these were coming and decided to cop the series on two.

They  have cut other stuff... But they didn't.

They almost axed BBC4, thankfully they didn't. But the amount of channels is still under threat. As are top wages. Doctor Who must have big wages...

But budget is no excuse for scripts and direction that miss the mark. Almost all this season was almost good enough. That  apply to two or three episodes in a series, they can't please everyone all the time after all. But this season had weakness throughout. Yes in one we finally saw more of the TARDIS but that plot was weak and I had issues with the direction. Crimson Horror had good acting, good direction but for me the comedy spilled the script.

The finale saved the series.

I was entertained by the series, I expect to be thrilled by it.

Doctor Who fundamentally has the same problem it's had since it returned in 2005, and it's something that affects a lot of modern TV: it needs a really good script editor with actual power, and it's pretty clear it doesn't have one. Someone needs to be able to sit down with scripts and improve them, add some extra humanity and dial back the whiff of sexism that pervades some of Moffat's stuff. By contrast, RTD could have done with someone to add some logic and proper arcs, and to dial down the EPIC BIGGER THREAT OMG aspect of his run.

I've enjoyed most of new Who regardless, but it's frustrating how often it's nearly really good rather than actually being really good. (It's also odd to think that if you combined the best of RTD and Moffat, you'd actually end up with what most modern fans seem to want.)

Word.  The crying was a great moment. The death of a Time Lord does that to a man.

That was my thoughts too,

Crying now takes the place of ' Jenkins. Chap with wings,Three round rapid fire!'

Yeah, I agree with most of that, Indigo - though I think I enjoyed this series more than you. I liked the 'non arc' episodes as much as the Clara resolution stuff. The Impossible Girl was a great idea. But all the references to 'snog boxes' and 'tight skirts' made me cringe. I guess he's just trying to take the Doctor/assistant relationship somewhere new, but it doesn't suit the character or the show.

Normally I'd agree.  However, the impact was reduced by the amount of crying in previous episodes.  Had there not been so much bawling previously I'm sure I would have been moved.

I haven't actually noticed a lot of crying in recent episodes..!

Believe me, I've been working in film and TV for 20 years, I know how it works.  You may think that those new monsters look stunningly expensive, but in terms of a TV show budget, they aren't.  A single camera lens can often cost more to hire for a week than the entire budget for FX throughout a 4 week shoot.

Regardless it's still more work than other shows have to do, and it's still funded by a state broadcaster who has had their licence fee frozen.

Thank you. Now, which makes me look more stupid, that I didn't think to look it up on Wikipedia or that I did but failed to type eight letters corerctly?  :-[

The way the BBC screw Doctor Who around does annoy me. 13 episodes a year, every year should not be beyond their abilities or finances. Personally, I could live without the Christmas specials.

Also agree with the point about the show needing a proper script editor. The Moffat era has flattered to deceive, I think largely because he spreads himself too thinly and lets his writer-mates get away with murder.

Mind you, John Bloody Hurt. I like that.
