The Ones That Got Away…

Talk over on the "Brits who weren't droids" thread has got me thinking more generally about ones who got away, creative teams that were so obviously perfect for a series or book but who, for whatever reason, never actually got the gig.

The big one for me would have been Hellblazer: John Smith/ Peter Doherty

(With an honourable mention for Alan Davis on Dredd, since his sole attempt suggested he would have been excellent; and for Kev Walker to have done a book of Slaine back when he still painted comics.)

Simon Coleby: Hellblazer (Artist)

Okay, you get the idea: most great 2000AD artists = great on Hellblazer.

We did get John Smith and Sean Phillips on Hellblazer, for a sublimely flesh-crawly one-off in the middle of the Ennis run. I believe he'd pitched the same time Garth did, and got a fill-in as consolation for not getting the gig. Shame really. John's one of the few comics writers who really knows how to write scary.

Steve Parkhouse should have been the heir to the Cam Kennedy 'Citizens' Dredd stories. His lugubrious schlubby 'Ordinary Joe' characters is always a joy and is very much in the Kennedy-mould.

Plus, ya know, he just has a beautiful line that so few comic artists are equipped with.

I always wanted the Blockers from the '88 Mega-Special to continue; Parkhouse would've been ideal (as was Casanovas).
