Could be a bargain for artistic types to get on the bottom of the Cintiq ladder.

All those with criticism of this product and warning offs please add to this thread.

OH HOLY BALLS. What a time to be utterly, utterly without money.

Not a fan of the 12", TBH. I found pen tracking wobbly and the bottom 1/2 inch of the drawing area practically unusable. Also, the very edge of the screen tended not to detect the stylus, which made invoking the dock in OSX a pain.

I should mention that this was at least three years ago, so these issues may have been addressed in the interim.

according to me Cintiq 12x is very good at this price  :o  (cheaper than US) .... but still small  :(

but you are right about the "bottom 1/2 inch of the drawing area practically unusable"

There are better tablets on the market now, but for a first-time upgrade to a pen display that is damn good value, and possibly an invaluable chance to dip a toe in the waters of such things before upgrading to a more expensive device that will cost you more than a car.  (a shitty car, admittedly...)

Quite a while ago there was an update that fixed those problems and also added extra calibration points during setup so that it was now more accurate than a Nintendo DS stylus, which was a nice gesture on Wacom's part towards the skinflints that would only pay for their cheapo 999 pound tablets.
BUT
If using Windows 7, don't use the latest drivers as they're worth fuck all and won't let you set the tablet up as a second monitor (you can only use it as a regular graphics tablet for the main monitor) despite being able to identify it as a second monitor in Windows' display settings and set it up as an extension of your desktop.  You want the driver with 637-5 on the end of it, which is a previous version I found on my old PC hard drive that has worked a treat - the driver that comes with it and the ones available on the Wacom site won't do the job.  Possibly this is also just me, but there's a single wandering pixel on my screen.  I thought it was a dead (black) pixel but it is actually moving about, which I found odd.

On wacom estore:

"Cintiq 40-day money-back guarantee

Not satisfied? No problem.
We are huge fans of our own products and assume that our customers are also extremely satisfied with their Cintiqs, which is why we're extending the return period for Cintiq online purchases made in the Wacom eStore from 14 to 40 days."

OMG how I'd love to own a Cintiq.  A big one, though.  To feel it's firm stylus in my hand, looking into that big screen that beckons me to take control and just lose myself in the moment letting the emotions and imagination pour out until I can.... er *ahem*.  Anyway.  Yes, it'd be nice :)

I bought a 13HD this year, and whole-heartedly recommend it. Probably doubled my work rate for the fiddly stuff, and just portable enough to be useful between office and home.

I can't map it properly to Mudbox for some reason, but that's my only gripe so far.

Jon, does the small size detract at all from the experience? Oh, and has anyone used one of the new Surface Pro 2 tablets? I hear they use the same type of pressure sensitive screen as the Cintiqs... :-*  I'm looking to buy either a Cintiq or a SP2 later this year, funds allowing. Might stretch to a 22HD, if I'm lucky.

It takes a bit of getting used to, but on the whole, no, not at all. I like the fact that because if the relative pixel density in cases of things like, oh for instance comics, you're actually getting more of a print feedback. Plus it's the best Wacom surface I've ever worked on, and it doesn't heat up at all.

I'll buy a larger one when I can afford it, of course, but as an affordable and portable solution (as a freelancer I can justify it under business expenses) I can't sing it's praises enough.
